Fast start by Bishop Manogue Miners beats North Valleys

RENO — Bishop Manogue quarterback Lincoln Hauck could do no wrong in the first half of the Miners’ season opening 28-14 win against North Valleys Friday — even after he fumbled on his first possession.

Running back Peyton Dixon picked up the ball and ran 51 yards for the touchdown.

Hauck added three rushing touchdowns in the first half en route to a 28-0 score at the break.

“It went pretty well,” Bishop Manogue head coach Thomas Peregrin said. “Kids were firing off the ball. We had some miscues. We had a couple turnovers that need to get corrected and we need to have ball security, but over the last six months we’ve been working on this and we just hope to get better and better.”

Manogue’s first half stunned the Panthers. Coming off a 1-8 season last year, Manogue looked unstoppable with Hauck behind center in the team’s new triple-option offense.

Hauck finished the game with 102 yards on 12 carries. Miner running back Angelo Reviglio added 69 yards on 11 carries and Dixon ran 8 times for 58 yards.

But Manogue showed its youth in the second half and nearly let North Valleys come all the back.

Hauck fumbled on the team’s first possession, which led to a Dajon Moore 50-yard touchdown run. With the Panthers on the board, Manogue’s Angelo Reviglio fumbled on the next possession.

“Defensively, we shut them out in the second half because we were disciplined in our assignments and we weren’t trying to do too much,” North Valleys head coach Tony Doucette said.

After the second Manogue fumble of the second half, the Panthers drove down the field again and scored another touchdown on an 18-yard fourth-down run from Cardayell Morgan.

North Valleys then stopped Manogue on downs, and that’s when Miners’ punter Daunte Garrett stepped up.

From his own 16-yard line, Garrett booted the ball over the Panthers’ return team. The 63-yard kick rolled all the way down to the North Valleys’ 21-yard line.

“That was key,” Peregrin said. “He stepped up and just banged one out there. It was huge. We really needed that. Special teams is a huge game changer when you can change field position like that.”

Defensively, the Miners stifled the North Valleys’ spread offense from the beginning. Panther senior quarterback Matt Sneed finished the game 4-for-13 with 31 yards and one interception. Moore led North Valleys with 95 yards on six carries.

Moore carried the Panthers in the second half, but came up one yard short on a fourth down play at the Manogue 11-yard line with the score 28-14 in the fourth quarter.

That stop sealed the deal for the Miners.
