YERINGTON — Dayton High’s volleyball team went 5-1 during this weekend’s Yerington Invitational.
Dayton finished third behind Spanish Springs and Yerington.
After going undefeated in pool play on Friday with wins over Whittell (25-7, 25-16), Elko (25-16, 21-25 and 15-11) and Los Molinos (25-16, 25-19), the Dust Devils beat Spring Creek and Lowry on Saturday before losing to Yerington, 19-25 and 21-25. Yerington went onto lose to Spanish Sprigs in the championship.
“This was a great way to start our season,” coach Monica Halverson said. “We dominated the match against Spring Creek. Our teamwork was strong. We were able to watch Lowry play Friday, and I was able to target the strong players on the team. We did well in beating Lowry with our offensive strategy. A weak mental focus caused us to lose focus of our goal to reach the championship game.
“We played a lot of good volleyball and were able to identify some of the weaknesses that we need to address in practice next week. We are going to the High Sierra Tournament over Labor Day weekend to face some teams we’ve never played before. Harder competition will help us play harder and move quicker.”
