Prep roundup: CHS tennis teams win, CHS golf plays Thursday

Carson High’s girls golf team opens the 2016 Sierra League season at Toiyabe Golf Club at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Coach Wade Greenlee returns five players — Jill Beglin, Camryn Aten, Angelika Morrison, Aly Perry and Jessika Montes — from last year’s squad. Abi Cowan, Kacey Lopes, Sarah Miller, Lauren Roby and Sadie Share round out the squad.

Beglin almost made state as a freshman, and she’s certainly using that as incentive entering her sophomore season.

“Jill is on a mission to get to state after her close call last year,” Greenlee said. “She played a lot of tournament golf over the summer and looks good. She is striking the ball better and hitting it longer. She is one of the top players in the north and has the passion for the sport to continue to get better. She is also a leader on the team and has been working with other players to help them understand tournament play.

“We will need Camryn and Angelika to improve on their performances from last year in order for us to make regionals. We will probably still be chasing Bishop Manogue and Galena, so it’s very important for us to get a fourth tournament player into the field to round us out. Aly has been working very hard and could be that fourth tournament player.”

In girls golf, six players compete and the best four scores count for the team total.

TENNIS

Carson girls triumph

SPARKS — The doubles team of Emma Breeding and Anya Woodbury won all three of their matches to lead the Senators to a 13-5 win over Spanish Springs Tuesday afternoon.

The win evened Carson’s record at 1-1.

Breeding and Woodbury won 6-2, 6-0 and 6-2. Nancy Henricksen and Mikaela Asby went 2-0, winning 6-1 and 6-1. Shaylin Segura went 2-1 in singles, winning twice by 6-1 and losing 6-0 to the Cougars’ Lauren Kreutzer. Emily McCaskill and Amanda Schulz, and Heather Lamotte and Henley Ball-McKenzie each won once in doubles. Emma Rosen and Elise Brady won once each in singles.

CHS boys edge Cougars

Carson edged Spanish Springs in a tiebreaker (4-2) to grab a 10-9 win Tuesday afternoon, evening its league record to 1-1.

Taylor Saarem and Jayson Artz went 3-0 and won 7-3 in their tiebreaker. Ryan Tomita also went 3-0, but lost his tiebreaker. Nico Salm and David Dudley also went 3-0 and won their tiebreaker 7-1.
