Labor Day event returns to Virginia City

Virginia City’s annual Labor Day Weekend celebration, complete with a parade, Civil War-era soldiers and appearances by local politicians, is returning Sept. 3-5.

As part of The Great Civil War Days, hundreds of Comstock Civil War Reenactors participate in battles throughout town and host a camp, free and open to the public, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday at Miner’s Park. Battles take place on the V&T Railroad throughout the weekend and in the heart of Virginia City on C Street.

A Victorian High Tea, complete with the Comstock Ladies’ own silver, china, crystal and linens will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday upstairs at the Delta Saloon. Tickets are $25.

Also on Sunday are battle trains, which leave the Virginia & Truckee Railroad F Street depot at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults and $12 for children. Tickets for the champagne battle train are $30 for adults and $15 for kids. The train includes champagne, apple juice for kids and snacks.

Prior to the champagne train departure, the Ft. Point Garrison Band will perform a free concert with period instruments at 6:30 p.m. at the F Street depot.

The events will culminate with the Labor Day Parade, which begins at noon Monday on C Street.

The parade, a tribute to American workers, includes unions representing trades such as iron and steel workers, the auto industry and the United Postal Service.

Parade entries for the annual Labor Day Parade include veterans groups, classic car clubs, equestrian groups and marching units. Parade entries are accepted until Friday. Download the parade form online, or call 775-847-7500.
