100 Years Ago

The qualified electors of the state of Nevada are now circulating a petition to be presented to the next legislature by virtue of and in accordance with Section 3 of Article 19 of the Constitution of the State of Nevada, proposing by initiative petition, that the legislature enact, at its next session, a law calculated to make Nevada a prohibition state…an act to prohibit the manufacture, sale, keeping for sale, and gift, of malt, vinous and spirituous liquors, intoxicating drinks, mixtures or preparations.

Every year brings the Lahontan Valley nearer to the front ranks as a turkey producing section. Mr. Vaughn, the local Wells Fargo agent, states that their records show that 105,433 pounds of turkey were shipped from Fallon for Thanksgiving alone. The price paid for practically all of these was 25 cents which means the distribution of upwards of $26,000 in cash for turkeys within a few days. The Nevada mining camps came in for a good share. However, the bulk of the shipments went to San Francisco.

75 Years Ago

Where fine horses were first raised, one of the first houses built in the valley sometime in the sixties by Lieutenant Governor Lem Allen, father of L.L. Allen, Churchill county commissioner. It was a story-and-a-half house built of adobe with a frame kitchen and porch. It was located on the present R.C. Bass ranch but burned in October 1934. Three young people of one Churchill county family, twin sisters and their brother, have received high 4-H rewards and just returned from the national 4-H congress in Chicago. Myrl Nygren won the state style dress revue at Lake Tahoe. She modeled a wool dress with blue cape and accessories. Her sister Maie’s was the same. Ray Nygren went to the national congress as a guest of Westinghouse Electric Company. He wrote an excellent report on rural electrification.

Get your Christmas trees early, and get them from the Boy Scouts! Word has it that the trees are absolutely beautiful this year, so order yours early so you don’t have to settle for an “unbeautiful” one, or a scraggly, scrawny one…Postmaster Lem S. Allen reminded Fallon residents today that there are only 24 mailing days before Christmas. Postmaster General Lawrence F. O’Brien has predicted that well over eight billion pieces of mail must be delivered between now and Christmas Eve, a new record.
