Prep roundup: CHS girls basketball wins

RENO — It wasn’t artistic by any means, but the Carson High girls basketball team was happy to get into the win column.

The Senators evened their record at 1-1 with a 41-33 win over South Tahoe Friday night at the High Sierra Challenge at Reno High School.

Carson concludes the tournament today at 12:30 p.m. against Spring Creek.

“We had much better effort,” CHS coach Melissa Larsen said. “We still have some things we need to work on. Haley (Garver) stepped up when we needed her to step up.”

South Tahoe led twice — 2-0 and 5-2. Carson led the rest of the way, and the closest the Vikings came was 17-13 with 2:36 left in the half after back-to-back 3-pointers by Drue Chapman and Zoe Mosedale. Neither team scored the rest of the half.

The Senators put together an 11-4 run to take a 28-20 lead with 2:37 left in the third quarter. Lauren Lemburg (team-leading 14 points) started the surge with a 3-pointer and Bella Kordonowy, after the teams traded turnovers, converted a three-point play to make it 23-15. After Brooke Erdody made it 23-17, Carson went on a 5-2 run sparked by Garver’s three-point play. Garver had two more buckets in the fourth quarter, the last of which extended Carson’s lead to 13, 36-23 with 4:03 left in the game.

Freshman Bella Kordonowy finished with 13 and Garver 10 for the Senators.

Erdody led South Tahoe with 13 points and Chapman finished with seven. Claudia Janese tallied six.

Dayton falls to 0-4

HAWTHORNE — The Dust Devils fell to Hawthorne, 64-28, and Lone Pine, 43-31, Friday at the Hawthorne Invitational.

The two losses dropped Dayton to 0-4. The team concludes the tournament today with a single game.

“The girls played much better the second game,” coach Kelly Frantz. “We came out with more energy but we were missing shots and not rebounding. I was much happier with our intensity in the second game, and we started seeing some good movement on defense, something we hadn’t done the last couple of games.”

Elora Neep led Dayton against Lone Pine with 12 points and seven rebounds, and Jessie Ingham and Aleea McGill-Howe added seven each. Against Hawthorne. Neep scored 10 and grabbed four rebounds, and Abby Sikora contributed eight. Ingha had six steals and played well defensively.

Sierra Lutheran triumphs

Grace Bonafede scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Falcons to a 31-20 win over Western Sierra Collegiate Academy of Rocklin.

The Falcons take on Foresthill at 11 a.m.

VARSITY BASKETBALL

Carson loses in OT

SAN FRANCISCO — Despite another sensational performance by senior Tez Allen, the Senators dropped a 71-70 overtime decision to Righetti-Santa Maria in a consolation game of the Crusader Classic at Riordan High School.

Carson concludes the tournament today at 12:30 against either Mills or Saint Mary’s-Berkeley.

After a 19-point 15-rebound performance against Mission, Allen came back with 42 points and 18 rebounds.

“He had a good night,” CHS coach Carlos Mendeguia said. “He has played really well. He hit some big shots on the perimeter for us.

”We valued the ball a lot better tonight.”

Mendeguia changed his rotation a little bit, and he said reserves Kyle Glanzmann, Jordan Torres and Kahle Good helped the team rally from a 21-point deficit. Righetti led 53-32 after three, but Carson outscored Righetti to send it into overtime tied at 61.

Righetti outscored Carson 10-9 in the extra period. Allen scored 32 of his points in the second half and overtime. Allen was 10-for-29 from the field and 21 of 30 from the charity stripe.

Trent Robison scored 19 to complement Allen.

Dayton splits at Truckee

TRUCKEE — The Dust Devils finished the Truckee Invitation by beating Truckee, 53-44, and losing to Hug, 56-38, Friday afternoon.

Dayton, 1-2, returns to action this Friday at 2 p.m. against Lovelock at the Reno Events Center. The game is a prelim to the Bighorns game that night.

J.J. Ply scored 18 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked four shots in the win over Truckee.

Trevor Burrows added 14 points, seven steals and seven rebounds. Dayton led from the outset, holding the Wolverines to just 15 first-half ponts.

Hug’s Malik Youmes scored 16 of his 19 points in the first half to give the Hawks a 20-16 lead. Dayton defenders were unable to keep Youmes in front of them.

Ply scored 17 and collected six rebounds, while Burrows had five points and seven rebounds, and Carson Crosby had six rebounds.

WRESTLING

CHS goes 2-1 at Fallon

FALLON — Carson High posted a 2-1 record during first-day action at the Fallon Duals Friday night.

The Senators beat Elko, 45-24, and Spanish Springs “B”, 64-18, and then lost 39-36 to Lowry’s Blue squad.

Carson will wrestle five times today to conclude the event.

“I was very pleased,” said first-year head coach Keith Shaffer.

“We wrestled some pretty tough kids tonight. Our (team) leaders did very well. I’m very optimistic.”

Brandon Basa (120) went 3-0 with three first-period pins, Jake Roman (145) also went 3-0 with two pins, Jesse Case (170) went 3-0 with three pins, Abel Carter (195) was 3-0 with three pins and John Rowe also went 3-0 at 220.

“Jake did a great job,” Shaffer said. “Things are starting to click.”

Kyle Rudy (132), Zach Bumby (138), Jarod Butler (160), Kellen McDermott (182) and Sheldon Miller (heavyweight) all went 2-1. Miller and McDermott each had two pins.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

Carson tops Hug by 20

Jackson Sayre scored 16, while Christian Miller, Danny Escalante and Colton Schafer added five each in a 54-34 win over Hug.
