Prep roundup: CHS impressive in wrestling, wins in girls hoops

FALLON — Carson High’s wrestling team wrapped up the two-dual Fallon Duals Saturday with five wins to go 7-1 overall.

The Senators knocked off South Tahoe 49-30, Lowry Gold 52-27, Dayton 58-18, Fallon 35-31 and Elko B 53-24.

Carson will be in Winnemucca next Friday for a two-day bracketed tournament, and that should give Keith Shaffer a better look of where is team is at. The team had some injuries, as Eli Thomas (106), Anthony Brumbaugh (113) and Sheldon Miller (heavyweight) all missed mat time on Saturday.

“I was pleasantly surprised, but not very surprised,” Shaffer said from the team bus. “Hard see to what we’re like just wrestling in the room. Guys had some matches and had to work through it. We’ve got some things to fix.”

Brandon Basa (120) went 3-0, Kyle Rudy (126) was 4-0, Nathan Mersino (138) was 5-0, Abel Carter (195) went 2-0, John Rowe (220) went 1-0 and Nick Andreas (182) went 3-0. Mersino didn’t wrestle Friday because he was attending a funeral on Friday in Oregon, but he got back in time to wrestle all five duals on Saturday.

Jake Roman (145) went 3-1, Seth Reichelt (152) went 4-1, Jarod Butler (160) went 3-2, Jesse Case (170) went 4-1 and Kellen McDermott (182) went 2-1. Garrett Tibma went 2-2.

Carson loses 3rd straight

SAN FRANCISCO — Despite a third straight double-double by Tez Allen (22 points, 10 rebounds), the Senators fell to Mills, 49-42, in the seventh-place game at the Crusader Classic at Riordan High School.

Carson, 0-3, hosts Spanish Springs Tuesday at 7 p.m.

“It was a little better,” Carson coach Carlos Mendeguia said. “They are starting to learn their assignments. Guys have gotten some playing time before Jayden (DeJoseh) and Gereat (Rauh) come back.

“We have four solid guys, but the other spots in the rotation are up for grabs. Guys have had their opportunities this weekend. We have to know what they can or can’t do. Guys have had moments (of playing well), but we haven’t done it collectively.”

Allen averaged 28 points and 14 rebounds in the tournament. Trent Robison added six with Kyle Glanzmann and Sevon Mandoki scoring five each.

Muckers fall to 0-4

HAWTHORNE — Virginia City fell to 0-4 Friday after losses to Lovelock (63-17) and Bishop (71-43) at the Serpent Classic.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Senators edge S. Creek

RENO — Carson closed out the High Sierra Challenge with a 46-39 come-from-behind win over Spring Creek.

Trailing 30-28 after three, the Senators outscored Spring Creek 18-9 in the final quarter. Lauren Lemburg drained two free throws late in the fourth quarter to help secure the win.

“We played hard,” coach Melissa Larsen said. “It was a physical game. The girls worked really hard and played great defense.”

Haley Garver led CHS with 13 points followed by Lemburg with eight, Lulu Street with seven and Bella Kordonowy with six.

Virginia City edges Dayton

HAWTHORNE — Despite a stellar 17-point 13-rebound performance by Elora Neep, the Dust Devils lost 42-40 to Virginia City on the final day of the Serpent Classic.

The loss dropped Dayton to 0-5.

“We lost a game we should have won,” DHS coach Kelly Frantz said. “Their press in the second half got the better of us and we made some bad decisions passing the ball in the backcourt.”

Kristina Mason had a nice game with eight points and 11 rebounds and Aleea McGill-Howe added eight points.

“The girls showed heart today, something they hadn’t shown the first two games,” Frantz said.

Dayton plays Lovelock at 12:15 Friday at Reno Events Center.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

Carson thumps Damonte

RENO — Danny Escalante scored 10 and Jackson Sayre and Garrett Clampitt added nine apiece to lead the Senators to an easy 62-18 win over the Mustangs Saturday at the JV Winter Invitational.

Carson is 2-2 heading into Tuesday’s home game against Spanish Springs.

Bishop Gorman wins 8th title

LAS VEGAS — Bishop Gorman won its eighth straight football title Saturday, demoralizing Liberty, 84-8, at Sam Boyd Stadium. The win stretched Gorman’s win streak to 54 games.

Quarterback Tate Martel had TD runs of 42, 9 and 18 yards, and TD passes of 9 and 30 yards before being pulled in the first series of the second half with the Gaels ahead 56-8.
