Senator Square: Students beat teachers in CHS Dodgeball Tournament

The annual CHS Dodgeball Tournament took place Dec. 6-16 in the Carson High School big gym during lunch, and both the victory and bragging rights went to the students and not to the teachers. The competition was fierce with rubber balls flying all over the place and many of the younger CHS teachers strutting their stuff out on the gym floor, battling feverishly to defeat the students. However, it was not physical strength or intellect that took the winning prize, it was the synergism and strategic tenacity of a group of male and female students working together that overcame and claimed the victory. What the teachers likely failed to realize and take into consideration is the fact that these students had already beaten five other teams. Logically then, when Anya Woodbury, Jesse Lopez, Harry Meyer, Jared Barnard, Elise Brady, Andrew Trejo and Nico Salm won the right to challenge the teachers to a game, it is no surprise the winners were the students; they had learned through experience how to effectively work together. The bottom line is everyone, teacher and student alike, had an unforgettably memorable experience.

THE REAL LIFE OF COLLEGE THROUGH THE EYES OF FORMER CHS GRADS

Decided where to go to college yet? Filled out all the applications? Been accepted? Now what? College life is scary at first. Want some tips and advice to make the transition easier? “The Real Life of College: Through the Eyes of Former CHS Grads” will happen in the CHS library on Jan. 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This fun and informative night is sponsored by the CHS PTSA, and refreshments will be served. This is a great opportunity to speak with college students, those who have inside experience about what to expect. Hope to see many CHS students there. NHS members will earn points for attending this event as well. Graduation is just around the corner, so do not be left wondering what to do next.

FOOD FOR LIBRARY FINES

Library fines? Food for fines are being accepted now through winter break in the CHS library. Each non-perishable food or toiletry item will waive a $1 library fine. Clear the fine while doing a good deed at the same time. What a great way to start the New Year!

CHS SPEECH AND DEBATE

CHS Speech and Debate competed in the McQueen tournament last weekend. The team earned over 50 top three or perfect points on ballots during the two-day event. Jessica Preston took seventh in novice impromptu speaking while teammate Evan Cherpeski finished fourth. Captain Sawyer Barnett was the winner in senior impromptu speaking, and Katherine Vallejos took eighth in novice humorous interpretation while Jocelyn Manzano Curiel finished fourth, and Adam Lackey claimed third in humorous interpretation as well; he now moves up to senior level completion. Speech Captain, Shane Morton, took second in senior humorous interpretation, Sophie Peterson dominated novice extemporaneous speaking earning first on every ballot in every round and claiming first in the event to advance to senior division in speech events. In congressional debate, Sarah Sever earned a Judges’ Preference, perfect speaker points on all her speech, top speaking in the chamber, and third in his novice chamber. Jessica Preston and Congress Captain Sadie Share both earned top judge picks and placed fifth and fourth respectively in senior congress. In Lincoln Douglas Debate, Sophie Peterson also placed fourth in speaker points and second with the top of Qualified Immunity for police. Debate Captain, Shaylin Segura, earned ninth in speaker points in senior LD and Sawyer Barnett placed third as well as first in speaker points in senior LD. The team competes again in January at Galena High School.

CHS SPRING SPORTS SIGNUPS

Spring sports signups begin Jan. 13, 2017. If physicals are needed (every 2 years beginning with freshman year), forms are obtained at the NIAA website at www.niaa.com under the forms tab or through the CHS Athletic Office during business hours. Both Form B and D are required for registration. Contact the CHS Athletic Department at 775-283-1900 or log onto www.carsonhigh.com website for information. The Athletic Department will be closed for Winter break Dec. 23-Jan. 9, 2017.

NEVADA MUSEUM OF ART SEEKS ENTRIES

Northern Nevada students, grades 7-12, are invited to submit creative and original artwork to the 2017 Scholastic Art Awards. Categories include: ceramics, architecture & industrial design, digital art, drawing, photography, fashion, film & animation, and more. The deadline to submit is Jan. 12, 2017, at 8:59 p.m. Students will be notified by Feb. 3, 2017, on their award status. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

Carson High school is pleased to recognize Emma Breeding as this week’s senior in the spotlight. Emma has a GPA of 4.75 and is carrying a full load of AP and Honors classes. She is currently an officer in the CHS National Honor Society and has been a member of Link Crew. Emma is one of CHS’ scholar athletes having been on the varsity tennis team, ski team, and swim team. This past fall, she qualified to represent CHS as part of a doubles team in the tennis state competition. Outside of school, Emma is active in the community working as a lifeguard for the Carson City Recreation Department. She has also been a member of Sierra Nevada Ballet. Emma’s favorite pastime is reading which has led to her passion for academics. Emma hopes to earn a degree in engineering, but has yet to decide on where she will attend college. She has applied to UNR, USC, UC Berkeley, UCLA, and Rice University. CHS is truly proud of the exceptional contributions Emma has made to Carson High School and the local community. Those who know her, already see how she will be successful wherever she continues her education, her rare disposition, and her exciting future life adventure.
