Local roundup: Carson girls beat Wooster

Carson High’s girls basketball team didn’t have a double-figure scorer in Tuesday night’s game against Wooster.

It didn’t matter.

The Senators had six players score at least six points in the 47-35 win over the Colts at Morse Burley Gymnasium.

Carson improved to 5-8 in league play. The Senators, firmly entrenched in the final playoff spot, visit Galena Friday at 5:15 p.m.

Lindy Lehman led Carson with eight points, while Andrea Maffei and Melissa Glanzmann added seven apiece. Bri Alvarado, Mallory Otto and Haley Garver added six apiece.

“It was really a good team win,” Carson coach Melissa Larsen said. “The first half we played really well. We attacked the basket. We did a lot better job passing the ball in the first half.”

The Senators led by 10, 22-12, at the half, and extended it to 33-19 after three. Wooster cut the lead to 39-31 with 2:25 left, but a drive and two free throws by Lehman and buckets by Otto and Glanzmann restored order.

“I put the rserves in, and we started turning the ball over so I went back to my starters,” Larsen said.

Douglas wins

MINDEN — An all-senior lineup put the Douglas High girls basketball team on top early on its way to a 70-60 Senior Night victory against Galena on Tuesday.

Douglas (7-6 league, 10-11 overall) jumped out to an 18-13 first-quarter lead and never trailed the rest of the way. The Tigers, however, were never able to completely put away a scrappy Galena (2-11, 3-16) squad in the Sierra League contest.

Freshman Janae Blue Horse scored 18 points to lead the Tigers offensively, while seniors Maddy Lowe and Terra Williams added 17 and 13 points respectively. Blue Horse came off the bench and scored 14 points in the second quarter, including four 3-pointers, as Douglas opened up a 39-27 halftime lead.

Galena hung tough behind a game-high 27-point performance from senior guard Ashley Brooks. Reilly Moss and Kristin Farrell scored 12 each for the Grizzlies.

Dust Devils lose thriller

FERNLEY — Dayton couldn’t overcome a 30-14 halftime defict before falling 52-47 at Fernley. Angela Sikora hit five three-pointers in the third quarter to pull Dayton to within eight points going into the fourth quarter.

Sikora had another big game with 33 points, five rebounds, two assists and two blocks.

Kristina Mason and Reilly Gibson each scored five points while Mason added six rebounds and two steals for the Dust Devils.

“I was confident going into the locker room at half because we were fighting for rebounds, anticipating passes and working hard,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said. “It was a hard fought game and I was happy to see such toughness on the floor.”

Sierra Lutheran falls

SMITH — Grace Bonafede had seven points and eight rebounds but it wasn’t enough for Sierra Lutheran which lost 46-25 at Smith Valley.

WNC blows big lead

Western Nevada College took a 10-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning on Tuesday in Phoenix, but it didn’t last.

South Mountain rallied for nine runs to complete a 12-10 comeback victory in a matchup of Western District baseball teams.

“South Mountain is a good team and deserved to win the series,” said WNC coach D.J. Whittemore, whose team lost 3-of-4 to South Mountain.

Daniel Nist’s fourth-inning grand slam put WNC ahead 4-1. It was Nist’s third homer of the series. The Wildcats added two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and three more in the eighth to build a seemingly insurmountable 10-3 cushion.

But the Cougars rallied against a taxed WNC pitching staff and position players. The final three pitchers out of WNC’s bullpen were infielder Riley Ingram, outfielder Bradley Lewis and second baseman Justin Mannens.

Nist topped WNC’s offense by going 3 for 5 with five RBI. Blake Morin contributed two hits, while D.J. Peters and Brogan Secrist each knocked in two runs.

Mannens and Chad Bell touched home plate three times and David Modler scored twice.

Dayton dropped by Fernley

FERNLEY — The Dust Devils played without leading scorer Josh Riders (ill) and dropped a 54-39 decision to the Vaqueros,

J.J. Ply led Dayton with 19 points and Trevor Burrows added 13. Dayton played with just seven players.

Dayton hosts Truckee on Friday.

Williams keys Galena win

MINDEN — Zach Williams posted a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds Tuesday night to help the streaking Galena Grizzlies to a pivotal 70-57 Sierra League victory against Douglas.

Galena (8-5, 14-9) moved into sole possession of third-place in the league standings by winning for the fifth time in six games. The defending region tournament champion Grizzlies are only one game behind second-place Bishop Manogue, a 69-54 winner over Damonte Ranch on Tuesday.

Michale Johnson led all scorers with 24 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead the offense for Douglas (7-6 league, 8-13 overall). The senior guard scored 10 in the second quarter and 10 more in the fourth.

The Grizzlies led 36-32 at halftime and then took charge over the opening five minutes of the third quarter when Noah Peck connected on a pair of 3-pointers and Williams added another to spark a 21-8 run.

Dillon Voyles scored 13 points and Derek Kline 12 for the Grizzlies, sophomore Moses Wood contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds and Peck finished with eight points.

Galena had 41 rebounds, 11 on the offensive end. The Grizzlies also shot 14-for-15 from the free throw line, 9-for-10 over the final 2:04.

Douglas plays at home again Friday against Manogue.

Carson boys roll

RENO — Derek Barry scored 18 points, Dawson Lamb had 12 points and Trevor Muckensturm added 11 points as Carson (12-9, 10-3) rolled to a 70-38 win over Wooster.

Sierra Lutheran girls win

SMITH — Lena Richardson scored eight points and Amanda Almeida, Alyena Gibson and Alyssa Rowe all added six points for Sierra Lutheran in its 34-18 win at Smith Valley.

Haupu keys JV win

Ku’Ulei Haupu scored 28 points to lead Carson to a 51-27 win over Wooster on Tuesday.

Blanca Sosa added six.

BOWLING

Carson loses to Cougars

Spanish Springs handed Carson High’s bowling team its first loss since 2012, 25-20, on Jan. 30. The match came down to the last three games.

Dustin Floyd led CHS with a high game of 258 and a 751 series. Skylar Belcher was next at 247-671 followed by Alec Fletcher 256-589. Samantha Hinton was at 204-583, Luis Celedan 207-583, Chesney Minor 204-561, Chris Baird 202-560, Matt Hinton 186-532, Conlin Herrick 183-528, Matt Liddell 193-520, Tyler Lethcoe 178-507 and Ray Ceragoli 172-506.
