150 years ago

The new flagstaff. The handsomenest and most substantial flagstaff in this state was raised on our Plaza yesterday. The topmost was fixed to the lower mast, and the whole staff was raised at once. It got into its place and position without the slightest accident. This is not so tall a staff as the one which was raised on the Fourth of July last, but it is much straighter.

Yesterday the Appeal received a diploma from the Nevada Agricultural and Industrial Association for the best exhibition of book and job printing. The only thing that detracts from the value of the award is the fact there was no other competition.

100 years ago

Matt Farrell, the bird fancier at the State Capitol, is looking for the dog that got away with the bread being placed in the Capitol Grounds for the birds. Matt, for some reason or other, forgot to crumble the bread up, but put a whole loaf in the place he had cleared off, thinking the birds would be able to peck at it, but Mr. Dog comes along, jumping like a coyote, through three feet of snow and swiped the whole loaf.

Mrs. Donald Dondero was the honored busiest at a stork shower recently given by Mrs. Howard Dale and Mrs. Barbara Franks. The delightful party was held at the home of Mr. And Mrs. Franklin Morrison on East King Street.

Restoration of Reno’s historic Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery at 10th and Angel streets was commenced Saturday by a group of volunteer employees of the Western Electric Company.

Several Carson City residents again voiced opposition to mandatory garbage pickup Thursday while supervisors reviewed results to consider rate increases for Capital Sanitation, Inc.
