Sport for the fancy. A grand chicken fight will take place on Saturday at the theater between Grey Eagle and Winters for $150 a side. Johnny Moore handles Grey Eagle, and Jerome Thorington handles Winters. The fancy have staked a big pile of coin on the results of these fights, and it be hooves all lovers of cock fighting to be on hand.

Excited Democrats. Since Col. Fair paddled through the Ormsby County pool, the Democrats of the city have been thrown into a profound state of excitement. When the senator, alias the Co., alias Uncle Jimmy, got off the train with his sleek beaver hat and faultless clothes, there was the object of the profoundest admiration on the part of everybody on the platform.

100 years ago

Had close call. Dan Hafferon and James Flood of Virginia City had a close call in that town yesterday when the roof of the old Hatch Bros. store caved in from the weight of snow and carried the men with it. They dropped about 30 feet and were pinned in between the timbers of the roof, but both escaped serious injury.

70 years ago

The 1946 bicycle licenses have arrived, Chief of Police Jack Parker said today, and will go on sale Monday morning. “Cost of the green and black metal tags will be 50 cents apiece and all bicycle owners in the city must have a plate by June 1,” said Parker.

50 years ago

About 150 Afghan white-winged pheasants will be released in Southern Nevada’s Virgin Valley this coming week in hopes the bird will put down roots in the area. The familiar Chinese ringneck pheasant does not do well in Southern Nevada.

Carson City’s Safe Ride, the program credited with saving teenage lives, will be out of business by Valentine’s Day. The all-volunteer program is being halted not because of lack of funds or volunteers, but because of insurance.
