The Division I postseason starts today when the Carson girls basketball team, the fourth seed in the Sierra League, travels to Reno High, the High Desert champions.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
The Senators enter the game as an overwhelming underdog. They are 8-15 and lost 57-12 in the season-opener against the Huskies, who are 25-2. The winner advances to Thursday’s semifinals at Spanish Springs.
Carson is coming off a loss at Douglas last Friday. The Senators have lost three in a row. Their last win came Feb. 2 against Wooster.
Bri Alvardo leads Carson’s offense at 8.1 per game and Haley Garver is averaging 5.4 a contest. Lindy Lehman is the third-best scorer at 5 an outing.
Reno’s only losses this season have come to nationally ranked Centennial-Las Vegas and Bishop Manogue. Reno and Manogue are the odds-on favorites to meet in Saturday’s title game.
The Huskies have a nice inside-outside game with 6-foot-4 Mallory McGwire, who is headed to Oregon, leading the way at 15.2 points per game. McGwire didn’t play a lot in the opener because the Huskies played a smaller lineup, and she really wasn’t needed. Backing up McGwire is Daranda Hinkey and Mikaya Shults. Hinkley had 17 in the first meeting and Shults is averaging 7.5.
