Howard Emmett English

Howard English, age 87, lost his battle with cancer on January 16, 2016. He passed away peacefully at Carson Tahoe Hospital surrounded by the love of his family. Howard was an amazing, giving man who loved life and made the most of every day. He enlisted into the U.S. Navy in 1945 at the end of World War II. In 1946-1947, on board the aircraft carrier and flagship USS Philippine Sea, Howard took part in Operation Highjump; an Antarctic exploration headed by Admiral Richard Byrd to establish an Antarctic research base in the South Pole. Howard served nearly 30 months on mine sweepers during the 3-year Korean War conflict. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in January 1954. He then went to work for Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company in Southern California where he committed himself to his career and raising a family until his retirement in 1980. Upon retirement, Howard relocated to Stagecoach, Nevada where he made his home. Howard was a devoted family man married for 59 years. He felt his children were his greatest accomplishment in life. He had a passion for square dancing and was a charter member of the Dayton Silver Squares. He was able to continue to square dance right up to the end of October 2015 when he attended a square dance festival in Yuba City, CA. Howard was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Phyllis, son Howard Philip, and sister Nella. He is survived by his brother David, sons Peter, Philip, and Paul, daughters Donna, Janet, and Patti, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A Celebration of Life honoring Howard will be held on March 26, 2016 at 11:30 AM at the Plaza Conference Center located at 211 East Ninth Street, Carson City, Nevada.
