Carson High’s boys basketball team reaped the benefits of a successful season.
All five starters plus head coach Carlos Mendeguia were honored in a vote of league coaches.
Mendeguia, who guided Carson to a 25-5 record, including a 16-0 league season, was named the Sierra League Coach of the Year, and he shared regional Coach of the Year with Reno’s Matt Ochs.
Asa Carter was named the Sierra League Player of the Year, and he shared co-Region Player of the Year with Marcus Loadholt of Spanish Springs.
Carter averaged around 15 points a game and had a deadly mid-range jump shot plus the ability to finish at the basket. “How often do you see a player who leads the team in scoring and is your best defender?” Mendeguia said. “Asa had an outstanding season and certainly deserved the honor.”
Jayden DeJoseph and Tez Allen, both of whom averaged in double figures and were the top rebounders on the team, were both all-Sierra and all-region selections. Jace Keema and Jared Rooker were all-Sierra second-team selections.
Tre Jackson was Douglas’ only first-team selection, while Jace Hart was a second-team pick. Zach Keller was an honorable mention selection.
On the girls side, Carson’s leading scorer Bri Alvarez, who averaged 9 points a game, was a first-team all-Sierra selection and first-team all-region. Lindy Lehman, a rugged inside player, and freshman Haley Garver were named second team and honorable mention, respectively.
Douglas placed Maddy Lowe on the all-Sierra and all-region first team while Janae Bluehorse and Hailey Hughes were second-team picks. Alexa Moss was named honorable mention.
Damonte Ranch’s Ed Shepard was named the Sierra League Coach of the Year.
