Ghostly. That infernal Chinese ghost has visited the quiet precincts of Empire — restless, wandering and horrid shape, avaunt, nor freeze our old blood with horror. Young Watson has seen the fearful apparition and Jack Wilde has lost 40 pounds of flesh at one sight thereof. The landlady lost four mince pies from the room which it was seen. Please ask Birdsall to keep his infernal spirits in the old Piper’s barrels in Virginia.

Major Dennis charges Bro. Seers with writing editorials on the soles of his slippers. Major Dennis could not do this on his slippers as he has the smallest feet of any Nevada Newspaper man. We once on a wager saw him put on ladies slipper and it seemed quite large for him.

The Old Year and the New
The New Year comes. The Old Year goes
Adown the pathway of the years,
Bent ‘neath his back of joys and woes,
Of Junetide smiles and April tears;
Across the fields with snowdrift white,
The Old Year passes on tonight.
The Old Year goes, The New Year stands
Before the door and waits us here.
Ho, bring him in with welcome hands.
The Year is dead! Long live the Year!

Drunken drivers faced more than just an array of tough laws in 1985. They also faced growing public concern about their behavior, and nothing reflected that concern more than what happened in Nevada. Under a new program, people were encouraged to report drunken driving resulting in 3,841 calls, locating 984 autos with 438 arrests.
