Teri Vance: I really want to say thanks for reading

I’m bad at receiving compliments (which isn’t too much of a problem because it’s rare I receive one).

I always have been. It used to be if someone said something like, “I like your hair,” I’d automatically respond, “I like yours, too.”

Then I’d notice they were bald.

So then I practiced just saying thank you. But then I end up just staring at people until they start to wonder if maybe they’d insulted me.

It happened a few weeks ago when a reader told me my column was his favorite part of the newspaper. I’m sure I said something awkward then we just sat in an uncomfortable silence.

I’m sure he regretted even bringing it up. And I felt bad.

Because I so much appreciate everyone who reads what I write. I even more appreciate those of you who enjoy it while you read it.

I’m fully aware of how lucky I am to make a living doing what I love, to have made my passion my livelihood. And I owe it to you. A writer is not a writer without a reader.

So thank you.

Thank you for reading. Thank you for understanding what I’m trying to say. Thank you for emailing or calling or texting or stopping me around town to tell me what you think of my column — even when I don’t respond quite right.

And, most of all, thank you for going along on this journey. Often, I write about matters that are close to my heart. You always respond with kindness and grace, especially as I’ve shared the experiences from my own family this year.

Sometimes, I write about people who are suffering, who need help from the community. You’re always there with support, both financial and emotional. It buoys me up personally and makes our town a better place to live.

A lot has happened over the last year. I left my job at the Nevada Appeal to set out on my own as a writer for hire. It’s been an adventure. One made possible only through the support of the community and your belief in me.

I’m so grateful. And I wanted to tell you so at the beginning of this new year.

I look forward to all 2016 has to offer. I can’t wait to tell you my stories and share yours.
