Prep roundup: Bad third quarter sends CHS girls to loss

RENO — North Valleys outscored Carson 20-4 in the third quarter en route to a 66-39 win over the Senators Tuesday night in a Division I crossover girls basketball game.

The loss dropped Carson to 2-3 in league play heading into Friday’s 5:15 match-up against McQueen.

“We played two quarters, maybe a quarter and a half,” CHS coach Melissa Larsen said. “Games are four quarters. We came out flat in the second half.”

The Senators outscored NV 11-5 in the final 3 1/2 minutes of the first half, cutting what was once a 12-point deficit down to six, 29-23, after the first 16 minutes.

Shelise Darrough converted two straight CHS turnovers into back-to-back 3-pointers, and then after CHS went two more possesions without scoring, Jada Casper knocked down another 3-pointer to make it 38-23 with 5:32 left in the third period.

Lindy Lehman and Haley Garver scored on back-to-back possessions for CHS to make it 38-27, but those were the Senators’ final points of the quarter. The Panthers ended the quarter with an 11-0 run and a 49-27 lead.

Darrough led NV with 16, Passion Burrell added 14 and Casper chipped in 10. Ivy Pembrook led CHS with 10, while Alyssa Street added nine. Lehman and Garver finished with six apiece.

Douglas girls snap skid

MINDEN — Janae Blue Horse knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 18 points Tuesday night to help lead the Douglas High girls basketball team to a 50-36 victory against Spanish Springs.

Hailey Hughes also contributed 11 points and 14 rebounds, Maddy Lowe 10 points and Hannah Carr nine as the Tigers rang up their second straight win and first of the league season. Douglas is 4-9 overall, 1-4 in league. Spanish Springs dropped to 3-12 overall, 1-4 in league.

Hughes and Blue Horse, both freshmen, combined to score 13 points as the Tigers took a 17-9 first quarter lead. Blue Horse scored six points on a pair of 3-pointers.

Falcons win league opener

Sierra Lutheran opened Division IV play with a 30-14 win over Whittell Tuesday night.

Grace Bonfede scored 10 points and pulled down six rebounds, and Clare Davison had nine points.

The win upped Sierra Lutheran’s record to 7-4.

VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL

Douglas boys fall

MINDEN — Marcus Loadholt scored 13 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to help Spanish Springs pull out a 69-63 Northern Division I crossover boys basketball victory on Tuesday night.

Michael Johnson scored 19 points, 10 in the fourth quarter, while Zach Kellar added 13 to lead Douglas (4-9 overall, 3-2 league).

Loadholt connected on a 3-pointer at the outset of the fourth quarter to give the defending High Desert League champion Cougars a 53-47 lead.

The Tigers pulled to within 62-59 on back-to-back jumpers from Johnson, however, that was as close as they would get.

Spanish Springs (7-6 overall, 3-2 league) converted 18 of 32 free throws to help hold off the Tigers.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

CHS falls by 9

Trent Robison and Trevor Muckensturm each scored 11 points, but that wasn’t enough for Carson (5-8) in a 54-45 loss to North Valleys. Derek Barry added nine points for Carson.

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL

Sierra Lutheran rolls

Amanda Almeida scored 12 points and Allyson Rowe added 10 points as Sierra Lutheran (10-3) beat Whittell 43-14 in its league opener.

Carson rolls past NV

RENO — Ku’Ulei Haupu scored 14 points to lead the Senators to an easy 45-21 win over the Panthers Tuesday night.

Camiell Simpson added 11 and Abbey Paulson nine for CHS.

FRESHMEN BOYS BASKETBALL

CHS wins thriller

Carson scored five points in the final 20 seconds to pull out a 41-39 win against North Valleys.

Garrett Clampitt scored 12 points and Gavin McIntosh added eight points for Carson.
