Man rescued from Goni Canyon in Carson City

Carson City rescue crews rescued a man who didn’t return home Tuesday night after an off-road vehicle trip when they reported to the scene shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday.

The victim, Bob Key of Carson City, was reportedly in Goni Canyon Tuesday afternoon looking for his lost dog when his truck slid off the road and rolled down the side of the canyon. After Key didn’t return home Tuesday night and wasn’t returning phone calls, his friend went to look for him Wednesday morning. It was believed Key was in his vehicle for nearly 16 hours because the last contact his brother had with him was about 2 p.m. on Tuesday, officials said.

Crews responded around 12:45 p.m. and were able make contact with Key. CareFlight was called to transport the man to Renown Regional Medical Center, however due to the terrain emergency vehicles and the helicopter were having difficulties getting to Key. It was more than an hour before he could be removed from the vehicle and transported to the hospital.

Officials said Key may have a broken arm and he was complaining of back pain, however he was stable and expected to be OK. Many on scene said Key was lucky to have made it out of the accident alive.

Know who you’re are going with. Ask yourself if this is the right route and right day for the group you’re traveling with.

Always tell someone where you’re going, when you plan to return and establish when to get help.

Make a plan. Don’t just decide on a destination. Be aware of current and pending weather conditions.

Bring water, food, shelter, light, first aid and fire.

Should you become lost, stay with your fellow travelers and vehicle.

And finally, if you’re not sure about a trip, don’t go! There will be other days.
