150 Years Ago

Married. In Jacks Valley, Dec. 31, 1865, by Rev. A. F. White, at the residence of the bride’s mother, Mr. John Hammond to Miss Sarah E. Winters.

130 Years Ago

Fire alarm. There was smoke issuing from a building in the rear of George Hark’s butcher shop. The smoke came from Hark’s brick smokehouse where he is curing Nevada hams. They are better than imported Eastern hams that come over the Rockies and around the horn.

110 Years Ago

A generous lodge. Elks members showed their timber on Christmas. They gathered the names of the youngsters at the Orphans’ Home and when the Christmastide arrived, it brought a full cargo of presents for the little folks at the State Institution: suitable furs, articles of use, boxes of candies. The Elks are generally known as the “best people on Earth.”

80 Years Ago

Birth rate. The birth rate broke its 30-year downward trend in 1934 by increasing 3 percent. There were approximately 94,000 more babies born in 1934 than the previous year.

50 Years Ago

Photo caption. Charlie the Clown, who dropped in at the Appeal office to announce his appearance at Murdock’s, expresses amazement at something he is reading upside down. He is wearing his jester’s cap, an item he picked up in England and which is worn by very few clowns these days.

20 Years Ago

Photo caption. A Nevada Department of Transportation employee stands next to a 30-foot diameter by 25 foot deep sinkhole on Highway 342 north of Silver City. NDOT expects to have it repaired by the end of the week.
