SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKLES: Thanks to Carson City’s BAC, music will play this summer

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: Thanks to the Brewery Arts Center, the music will play this summer in Carson City. BAC, with the public’s assistance, secured a $25,000 grant for a summer concert series featuring 10 concert dates, beginning in June. Also featured during the series will be a day-long festival in which the top local music acts will be featured. Regional and national music acts will be featured as well. Those in Carson City who voted for the community to receive the grant also deserve a Silver Dollar as their effort was a big factor in the community receiving the grant. Carson City, a community with 55,000 residents, won the grant over communities as big as 400,000, so the accomplishment was no small feat.

SILVER DOLLAR: The the Nevada Rural Housing Authority for securing a $40,636 grant which will help provide housing in Carson City for homeless veterans.

WOODEN NICKEL: To Silver State Charter School. What was supposed to be a unique opportunity for local students to receive an alternative education in Carson City turned into a fiasco — at the taxpayers’ expense — with virtually no accountability and the eventual — and justified — closure of the school at the end of the school year.
