Prep roundup: O’Keefe takes an impressive 5th at big California event

CLOVIS, Calif. — Carson High wrestling standout Brady O’Keefe knocked off Wade Unger, 4-3, to finish fifth at the 39th annual Doc Buchanan Classic Saturday at Clovis West High School.

O’Keefe wrestled unattached for the event.

He opened the tournament with a 6-4 win over Bobby Miguel of Clovis, and then followed up with a 9-4 win over Jack Ramakia of Granite Bay to reach the quarterfinals. He lost for the first time in the tourney to Jaden Enriquez of Mission Oak, 16-4.

O’Keefe battled back with pins against Miguel and Dante Preciado of Castle Oak to reach the consolation semifinals. He ran into top-seeded Navante Demison of Bakersfiled, and suffered a third-round pin.

In the fifth-place match against Unger from Bergen Catholic-New Jersey, O’Keefe used two takedowns to grab a 4-1 lead after the first period. Unger managed an escape point in the second peiod to make it 4-2. Unger was awarded a stalling point seconds before the match ended.

O’Keefe went 5-2 for the tournament, and improved by three spots from his finish at the Tournament of Champions. O’Keefe wrestled at 145 in that tournament, but dropped to 138 this weekend.

Wooster’s Ian Timmins finished third at 120 pounds.

JV WRESTLING

Carson has four champs

Carson High crowned for champions at the eight-team JV Invitational held at Morse Burley Gym.

Zach Bumby won at 132, Dawson Breuer at 145, Jesse Case at 160-170 and John Rowe at 182-195. Breuer was named the outstanding wrestler of the event.

No team scores were kept.

“I thought we wrestled pretty well,” said CHS JV coach Morgan Ovard. “Dawson did really well as did Zach, Jesse and Rowe.”

At 132, Carson’s Mark Trost was third. Daryll Heyward took second at 138, John Rupert was third at 152. Ty Evans was third at 160-170 and Bryce Newhall was second at 182-195.

Other winners were Reno’s Victor Martinez (106), Damonte’s Elijah Bouchard at 113, Lovelock’s Kasey Brown (120), ROP’s Miguel Tejada (126), Fernley’s Carter Chapin (138), Reno’s Dylan Cox (152) and Lovelock’s Axel Gonzalez (220-heavyweight).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Virginia City edged

VIRGINIA CITY — Virginia City lost a heartbreaker to fall to 1-1 in league, losing 54-53 against Pyramid Lake. The Muckers led 53-52, but missed two free throws with 8 seconds left.

Pyramid Lake grabbed the rebound and even though Virginia City had just two fouls and five fouls to give, the Muckers failed to foul until on the shot which Pyramid Lake made with 1.5 seconds left. Pyramid Lake missed the free throw for the final margin as the Muckers didn’t have enough time to rally.

Colt Hess scored 15 points, Tristan Steele had 14 points and Hugh Fonzo added 12 points for the Muckers.
