The Carson City School District is seeking information on any persons involved in vandalizing a solar panel at Seeliger Elementary School.

Mark Korinek, director of Operations for the school district said a contractor discovered the damaged panel Friday, but school officials believe it may have happened the week before. The glass covering the panel has spiderweb cracks as if someone smashed it with a rock, Korinek said. The wire surrounding it also was tampered with.

The solar panel costs about $700 to fix, however it is a substantial loss for the school, because the damaged panel is linked to 12 other panels and when one goes out, they are all unusable. That removes about 3 kilowatts of power it’s not producing, which drives energy costs up and reduces the amount of money the school can put toward students.

Anyone with information should contact Mark Korinek at 775-283-2175.
