Prep roundup: CHS girls roll to win against Wooster

RENO — Carson High opened the second quarter with a 17-0 run to wipe out an eight-point deficit and beat Wooster, 63-29, in a Sierra League girls basketball game Friday night at Craig Congdon Gym.

Carson improved to 3-5 in league play heading into Tuesday’s home game against Galena at 5:15 p.m.

Ivy Pembrook had eight of her team-best 11 points in the second quarter while Bri Alvarado dropped in five free throws to lead the surge and give Carson a 27-17 lead after 16 minutes. The only Wooster player CHS didn’t contain was Leilani O’Day, who scored all 17 Wooster points in the first half and had 24 for the game.

O’Day dropped in a trey to open the second half to make it 27-20, but Carson scored the next 14 points to take a 41-20 lead late in the third quarter.

“We attacked the basket,” Carson coach Melissa Larsen said. “We also played good defense and did the little things.

“We played a lot better in the third quarter, I challenged them to come out and play in the third quarter, and we did that. I was also able to get all the girls into the game which is nice.”

Mallory Otto scored 10 points off the bench, and was active defensively.

Tigers roll past Galena

RENO — Douglas used a big first half as the springboard for a 55-40 Sierra League victory on Friday night.

Douglas (4-4 league, 7-9 overall) has won its last four league games and stands third in the Sierra League standings. Galena (1-7 league, 2-12 overall) has lost its last 12 games.

Douglas jumped out to a 15-6 lead after one quarter and extended the margin to 35-15 at halftime.

Sierra Lutheran rolls

VIRGINIA CITY — Grace Bonafede had nine points, nine rebounds and five blocks and Clare Davison added nine points and six steals to lead Sierra Lutheran to a 35-19 win over Virginia City.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Galena beats Douglas

RENO — Galena ended its league slump in a big way Friday night with a 59-40 victory at home against Douglas.

Galena (4-4 league, 10-8 overall) had lost four of its last five league games by a combined total of 13 points.

Douglas (5-3 league, 6-10 overall) saw a two-game win streak snapped. The Tigers came into the game with sole possession of second-place in the Sierra League race.

Lowry pounds Dust Devils

DAYTON — The Buckaroos rolled to a 33-16 halftime lead en route to a 59-33 win over Dayton Friday night in Division 1A action.

Nathan Lutzow led Lowry with 13 points, while Omar Guerrero, Jared Taylor and Jed Teichert all added eight points.

Josh Riders led Dayton with 15 points and Brendan Thomas added six.

Jonathan Ply had nine rebounds and four blocked shots.

Dayton visits Truckee today at 2:30 p.m.

Muckers top S. Lutheran

VIRGINIA CITY — Colt Hess scored 13 points and Hugh Fonzo added 12 to lead Virginia City to a 37-27 win over the Falcons in a Division IV matchup.

Virginia City, 2-1, plays at Coleville today at 5:30 p.m.

JV BASKETBALL

Carson boys triumph

Dawson Lamb scored 13 points and Lakoda Smokey added nine to lead the Senators to a 57-32 win over Wooster at Morse Burley Gym on Friday.

Trent Robison added nine for CHS, which squared its record at 8-8.

CHS girls win big

RENO — Lauren Lemburg dropped in 16 points to lead the Senators to an easy 54-22 victory at Wooster on Friday.

Ku’Ulei Haupu added 10 and Blanca Sosa seven for the winners.

Lowry overpowers Dayton girls

DAYTON — Dayton’s offense never got started in a 61-9 loss to Lowry on Friday.

Mackenzie Montero led the Dust Devils with six points.
