150 Years Ago

Dayton. The Appeal acknowledges the receipt of a ticket to “Starling.” There will be a Methodist Church Festival at Doyle’s Hall in Dayton to benefit A. F. Hitchcock. Tickets are $1 each.

130 Years Ago

Hydrophobia. Little Eddie Applegate, who was bitten in early December, died in horrible agony. It is the first death by hydrophobia in that area. Farmers in the neighborhood will be extirpating wandering dogs with great vigor (New York).

110 Years Ago

Strenuous work. The storm has been keeping the boys on the electric line busy. Tom Kearney has been out every day so that Carson might be supplied with electricity, and then on to Virginia City to make repairs. Every time the wires are down it means hard and dangerous work for the repair crew.

70 Years Ago

1946 license plates. Deadline for purchasing is Jan. 31. A total of 540 plates have been issued by the Ormsby office. The plates, resplendent in silver lettering and a blue background, number from 40-051 for pleasure cards; Tr-0351 to Tr-9625 for trucks. Veterans get a break in making license plate purchases — an exemption of $1,000 in property taxes.

50 Years Ago

Comstock licensed saloons. Virginia City thought they had the title of the most licensed saloons because of their population of about 500 and 15 licensed saloons, but when compared to the village of Dingle, Ireland, it is not. In Dingle they license saloons in grocery stores and butcher shops.

20 Years Ago

Barry Smith. Barry Smith has been named as managing editor of the Nevada Appeal. “The capital city deserves a good newspaper, one that’s well-rounded and gives people a good mix of world and state coverage, but mainly local news,” Smith said.
