Prep roundup: Fitting night of 3s for Tre, Tigers

MINDEN — Tre Jackson and the Douglas Tigers wasted no time getting on track Friday night.

The Tigers shot 7-for-8 from the field to start the game, including three 3-pointers by Jackson, and never looked back on their way to an 89-51 Winter Homecoming victory against Damonte Ranch.

Douglas (6-4 Sierra League, 7-11 overall) shot 13-for-23 (57 percent) from beyond the arc and 35-for-59 (59 percent) from the field overall to snap its two-game losing streak in a big way.

Jackson finished the night with 19 points, 13 of which came in the first quarter when the Tigers raced to a 29-12 lead.

Dylan Hicks also scored 15 — shooting 6-for-6 from the field — and Michael Johnson 12 on a night when 14 Douglas players reached the score column.

Tanner Williams and Sam Johnson dished out six and five assists respectively for the Tigers. Johnson had three assists in the first quarter and also knocked down a 3-pointer to give Douglas a 22-12 lead.

Damonte Ranch (3-7, 5-14) never got any closer than 10 points the rest of the way. The Tigers led 47-28 at halftime.

Brett Cooper scored 20 points to lead the Mustangs, 17 of which came in the first half.

Elko dominates Dayton

DAYTON — Trevor Burrows had a strong all-around game for Dayton, but it wasn’t enough in a 57-17 loss to Elko. The Dust Devils were playing without one of their top players in J.J. Ply, who was out with a high ankle sprain.

Burrows had five points, four rebounds, two assists and one block and shut down Elko top scorer Eric Klekas, who scored just eight points, including just two points in the first half. Klekas hit two three-pointers in the second half when he wasn’t guarded by Burrows.

Elko took advantage of 19 Dayton turnovers to build a 27-5 halftime lead. Tyler Peterson scored five points and Josh Riders added four points for Dayton.

Hawthorne knocks off Muckers

VIRGINIA CITY — The Serpents outscored Virginia City 8-3 in the fourth quarter to grab a 47-41 win in a Division IV game Friday night.

Colt Hess led VC with 17 points.

The Muckers visit Whittell today at 5:30 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Manogue routs Senators

RENO — Bishop Manogue bolted to a 12-0 lead and cruised the rest of the way in a 69-26 win over Carson Friday night in a Sierra League game.

The loss dropped Carson to 4-6 in league play. The Senators remained tied for third with Douglas, which lost to Damonte Ranch. Carson hosts Douglas Tuesday with sole possession of third place at stake.

The Miners led by 24 after one, and the lead reached 41 points, 61-19 with 3:38 left in the third period. The last 11 minutes was played with a running clock.

Ivy Pembrook led Carson with six points, while Bri Alvarez and Mallory Otto added four points apiece.

Mustangs outlast DHS

MINDEN — Big runs proved decisive as the Damonte Ranch girls basketball team rallied for a 61-42 Sierra League victory against Douglas Friday night.

First, Damonte Ranch scored seven unanswered points to start the second quarter and finished with seven unanswered points to end it to turn a 15-8 deficit into a 22-17 halftime advantage. Then the Mustangs went on a 19-0 run over the final 5:12 of the third quarter to break the game wide open.

By winning, Damonte Ranch (7-3, 13-4 overall) solidified its hold on second-place in the Sierra League race. Douglas (4-6 league, 7-11 overall) is still tied for third-place in the league with Carson.

Four Mustangs scored in double figures, led by sophomore guard Alexus Hunter with 16 points and nine assists. Kyra Bruesewitz scored 15 points with four 3-pointers, while Meagan Carlson and Morgan Waller added 13 each.

Carlson grabbed 11 rebounds, four on the offensive end. Bruesewitz sank three 3-pointers in the third quarter.

Maddy Lowe led all scorers with 17 points for Douglas. Hailey Carr scored 11 points, nine of which came in the fourth quarter.

Sierra Lutheran rolls

SPARKS — Grace Bonafede posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead Sierra Lutheran, which rolled to a 45-9 win over Excel Christian. Kirsten Iverson scored nine points, Clare Davison had seven points and Brynna hansen added 14 rebounds for the Falcons.

Elko routs Dayton

DAYTON — Angela Sikora scored 13 points, going 8-for-9 from the foul line, to lead Dayton in its 65-29 loss to Elko. Sikora also had seven rebounds and Elora Neep scored six points for the Dust Devils, who trailed 39-14 at halftime.

“We had a hard time getting going offensively and gave up too many fast breaks by Elko but the girls stayed tough the entire game,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said. “I know Elko is a tough team and they have a lot of talent. I am proud of my girls for stepping up and playing their toughest.”

Carson girls subdue Manogue

RENO — Abbey Paulson scored 16 points and Haupu Ku’Ulei added 15 to lead the Senators to a 54-51 hard-fought win over Bishop Manogue.

Lauren Lemburg chipped in eight points and Camiell Simpson added seven.

Carson boys fall

RENO — Derek Barry scored nine points and Kyle Glanzmann, Dawson Lamb and Lakoda Smokey all added six points for Carson (9-9), but it wasn’t enough in a 52-34 loss to Manogue.

Elko slams Dayton girls

DAYTON — Mackenzie Montero scored three points for Dayton’s girls in their 55-7 loss to Elko.
