Prep roundup: Dayton teams fall; CHS wrestle wins title

DAYTON — Turnovers and second-chance points.

Spring Creek scored 20 points off Dayton turnovers and scored 15 second-chance points in its 57-46 Northern 1A win over the Dust Devils Saturday afternoon.

Dayton dropped to 1-7 in league play and Spring Creek improved to 2-6.

“We’ve been killed on the glass all season,” Dayton coach Jason Santos said. “We played a lot of zone, and our guys didn’t do a good job of getting to their rebound assignments.”

“We did (hurt them on the boards),” Spring Creek coach Scott Carsrud said. “They were in their zone most of the game, and we did a good job getting to the basket and getting a second or third shot.”

Dayton was in the game until the final five minutes.

Trailing 39-34 with 7:29 left, Dayton had a chance to cut it to three, but Jonathan Ply missed, and then Dayton missed the putback.

Spring Creek’s Jake Miner knocked down two free throws, and after a Josh Riders turnover, Jake Peterson drove the lane, sank the basket and the ensuing free trow to complete the three-point play to make it 44-34. The teams went the next 2 1/2 minutes without a point, and Miner made it 46-34 on a backdoor lay-up with 2:29 remaining.

Riders hit two threes and Brandon Thomas converted two free throws to keep the deficit in single digits at 50-42 with 1:52 left. Two free throws by Ryan Knudsen and one by Jon Jund made it 53-42. Dayton never got closer than nine the rest of the way.

Santos admitted the Spartans’ 1-2-2 defense gave his team problems. Dayton players were throwing the ball cross court instead of over the top, which led to several turnovers.

Knudsen led Spring Creek with 20 points while Jake Oliphant added 12 and Petersen 11,

Riders led Dayton with 18 and Jonathan Ply scored 17. The duo scored 19 of Dayton’s 21 first-half points.

Spring Creek pounds Dayton

DAYTON — Ashley Bodin and Kaitlyn McLeod scored 13 points apiece to lead the Spartans to an easy win over the Dust Devils.

The Spartans outscored Dayton in every quarter, and were never seriously threatened.

“We came out a little slow running the offense,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said. “We were able to score early. We need to focus on being more aggressive offensively. We hit the boards hard and cut back on our turnovers.”

Angela Sikora led Dayton with 21 points and nine rebounds.

WRESTLING

Senators win title in Albany

ALBANY, Caif. — Brady O’Keefe, Connor Sievers and Sheldon Miller won individual titles to lead Carson High’s wrestling team to the championship at the Bankson Invitational at Albany High Saturday afternoon.

The tournament win was Carson’s second straight. The Senators won last weekend at Sutter High.

O’Keefe went 3-0 at 138, Sievers 4-0 at 195 and Miller 2-0 at heavyweight. Terin Keller (3-1, 106), Brandon Basa (2-1, 120), Abel Carter (3-1, 170) and Corey Jasper (2-1, 220) all placed second. Kevin Rusler (182) was third with a 3-1 record. Ethan Lepire (113) and Kyle Rudy (126) were fourth. Carson returns to action Wednesday when it visits Manogue in a dual match. The Senators are 3-0 in Sierra League competition. The team will be at the Placer Duals next Saturday.
