Prep roundup: Carson wrestlers clinch share of title

RENO — It was over almost before it started.

Thanks to 10 forfeits and four pins, Carson High’s wrestling team whitewashed Bishop Manogue, 84-0, clinching a share of the Sierra League championship.

Carson is 4-0 with just a regular-season finale at home against Douglas.

Action started at 182s, and Kevin Rusler pinned Mike Miller with 1:30 left in the match. Connor Sievers followed, and he needed just 14 seconds to dispose of Quentin Gwaltney to make it 12-0. Corey Jasper made it 18-0 when he pinned Ryan Miller with 43.5 left in the second round.

Ten forfeits followed, and then Abel Carter pinned Lincoln Hauck to send the spectators home early.

“It is kind of frustrating,” CHS coach Justin Shine said when asked about all the forfeits.

“It’s good to see they still have a program going. They have a state champ (Bailey Bright) on their roster.”

The competition will heat up dramatically this weekend, as Carson takes part in the 12th annual Placer Invitational in Auburn (9 a.m. start). According to the tournament website, 16 teams are entered, including Carson, Damonte Ranch, Douglas, Reno and Spanish Springs.

“Last year we ended up wrestling both Damonte and Spanish Springs,” CHS coach Justin Shine. “We ended up beating Damonte after we had lost to them in the league dual. Spanish Springs has always been one of the top teams in the north.”

Shine expects his team to be at full strength for Saturday’s event. Terin Keller (106), Ethan Lepire (113), Brandon Basa (120), Kyle Rudy (126), Jake Roman (132), Nathan Mersino (138), Brady O’Keefe (145), Austin Rudy (152), Jarod Butler (160), Carter (170), Rusler (182), Sievers (195), Jasper (220) and Sheldon Miller (heavyweight) comprise the Carson starting line-up.

Damonte Ranch 50, Douglas 26

MINDEN — Blake Murray, Kindel Isham, Shane Trivitt and Will Williams delivered pins for Douglas, however, the Tigers were unable to keep pace in a 50-26 Sierra League dual meet loss at home against Damonte Ranch.

Douglas gave up 24 points when it forfeited four weight classes to absorb its first league loss of the season. Damonte and Douglas are now tied for second-place in the league standings with 3-1 records.

Damonte’s only loss came at the hands of Carson in December. The Tigers conclude their league season next Wednesday with a dual at Carson.

Murray won the 160-pound match by fall, as did Isham at 106 pounds, Trivitt at 126 pounds and Williams at 138 pounds. Douglas 120-pounder Ryan Adams also won his 120-pound match 9-3 against Cody Larkin.

The most exciting match of the evening was waged at 113 pounds, where Damonte Ranch sophomore Greg Ewert scored on a takedown with eight seconds left in regulation to edge Andrew Williams, 5-3. Williams had taken a 3-2 lead with a buzzer-beating takedown at the end of the second period. Ewert tied the score with an escape at the outset of the final period.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Yerington drubs Dayton

YERINGTON — Sam Hammond and Koby Foster scored 18 points apiece to lead the Lions to an easy 71-44 victory in a nonleague game Tuesday night.

Josh Riders and J.J. Ply paced Dayton with 13 apiece.

Dayton returns to action Friday at home against Fallon, and then hosts South Tahoe on Saturday.
