Carson City Parks and Recreation is partnering with the Salvation Army to make sure area families who need help getting supplies are prepared for the upcoming school year.

The Summer Kamp School Supply Donation Drive kicked off Monday, July 18, and is running through Aug. 12.

Anything from backpacks to binders and lunch boxes to index cards are needed.

“Giving back is the biggest thing someone can do,” said Sierra Fowzer, Carson City Parks and Recreation Aide Supervisor. “We watch families grow up, I’ve seen kids who don’t have something as simple as crayons.”

Other items being collected include: glue sticks and bottles, No. 2 pencils, scissors, markers, crayons, paper, folders, notebooks, pencil boxes, rulers, calculators, tissue boxes, pens, colored pencils, hand sanitizer, highlighters, USB flash drives, ice packs and pencil sharpeners.

This is the first year Parks and Recreation is putting on the drive with Salvation Army. All donations go to families in Carson City and surrounding communities.

To help, bring school supplies to the Carson Aquatic Facility, or choose a child’s name from a paper apple tree set up at the Aquatic Facility, buy the items paired with the name, and return them to the Aquatic Facility.

The Aquatic Facility, at 841 N. Roop St., is open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

For more information, call Fowzer at 775-283-7428 or the Salvation Army at 775-887-9120.
