Big turnip: A turnip the size of a small boy’s head was made a present to the Appeal ... grown in the garden of Mr. Fox. We find it particularly crisp and edible.

Sulfur shower explained: The same phenomenon was witnessed in Truckee. Instead of the material being sulfur, it is the pollen from the pine trees. The frogs that came down must have been tree toads. Prison authorities still insist that the shower contained sulfur. (Truckee Republican)

Ramsey, Nevada: Members of the Ramsey town site were in Dayton filing plats and completing incorporation and other work to the location of a new mining camp. Two new stores were opened there, a big blacksmith shop and a water plant. The panning from almost every gulch return from $20 to $200 to the ton.

Photo caption: The Rinckel Mansion, Curry and King streets, is the only one of more than a dozen historic residences in Carson City which is open to the public. It is on a “Mansion Tour” publicized by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce and attracts many visitors during the summer months. It is owned by Ann Lindstrom, and a caretaker is on hand to show visitors through.

Smuggling: A 28-year-old woman was detained at the Northern Nevada Correctional center when she was caught allegedly trying to smuggle marijuana into the prison in her bra. Bail set at $20,000.
