Community spotlight: Lehman finishes 14th at national rodeo event

Brynn Lehman finished 14th in the nation in pole bending at the National High School Rodeo Finals in Wyoming last week.

Lehman was sixth in 20.326 in the first go, and made it into the top-20. She followed that time with a 20.75. Lehman competed for Team Nevada.

Lehman competed against 180 girls from the United States, Canada and Australia.

Mello quartet wins at Toiyabe GC

David Mello, Emmanuel Ramiro, William Pereda and Eric Ottenheimer combined for a net 117 to win the Men’s Day tournament at Toiyabe Golf Club.

The team of Tom Brennan, Burt Clements, Mike Fraga and Rob Jennings-Teats were four strokes back at 121, a shot ahead of Michael McGee, Mike Bennert and Jack Bonar. Buz Allen, Bill Eng, John Shanks and Larry Goodnight were fourth at 125.

Nichols wins top flight at Silver Oak

Russell Nichols shot a net 66 to win Flight 1 at the Silver Oak Men’s Club stroke play event on July 17. Nichols edged Dennis Baughman and Eric Fujita by one shot and Bill Prowse by two shots.

Eric Moormann and Shawn Akers tied for the Flight 2 crown with 65s. Robert Martin was third with a 66, Joe Paden, Don Fox and Pete Koliastasis tied for fourth with 67s. Kevin Johnson won closest to the hole on No. 14 and he also had the low gross round with a 73.

Jim Sapien and Scott Lusty tied for Flight 1 honors in the July 10 tournament with 69s. Nichols was third with a 70. Manny Lopez won Flight 2 with a 62, while Bill Whitstone had a 63. Moormann, Kelly Pingel, Martin and Ryan Balik shot 68s. Whitstone won closest to the hole on No. 12, while Johnson and Sapien tied for low gross with 75s.

Scott Lusty won Flight 1 in the July 3 event with a net 65, one shot better than Milo Beauchman and Ian Ippolito. Fox took Flight 2 with a 62, three shots better than Paden and four better than Whitstone. Evan Shane was closest to the hole on No. 7 and Beauchman won low gross with a 69.

Pearson and Roscha win at Empire Ranch

John Pearson and Vic Roscha shot a net 55 to win Flight A at the two-man best ball event for the Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club.

Dennis Small and Myron Carpenter were second with a 56. Donnie Curd and Bob White won Flight C with a 55. Dan Rodgers and Mala Chizek also shot 55 but finished second. In Flight C, Clark Reid and Richard Ziegler won with a 55, while Bob Pluth and Bud Dick were second with a 56. In Flight D, Paul Weller and Jack Medeiros won with a 55 with Don Swann and Maurice Dias taking second with a 58.

Dick, Skip Yokota, Ray Huntley and John Masiello won closest to the hole honors.

Local residents finish endurance run

The following local residents finished 100-mile, 50-mile and 55K distances in the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Run held July 16 at Spooner Lake State Park.

100-mile finishers: Jason Laurie and Kevin Bigley of Carson City; Nicholas Laughton of Fernley; and Chet Fairbank of Washoe Valley.

50-mile finishers: James Kosta and Shambo Rowe of Gardnerville; Sara Holm of Incline Village; Lyndsey Bednar of Stateline; and John Greever of Zephyr Cove.

55K finishers: Joe Thornburg, Emma Herron, Clare Davison, Nancy Davison, Makaela Bigley and Rick Cartier of Carson City; Jason Tollmann of Genoa; Diane Frederic of Incline Village; and Amy Tang of Stateline.

Volleyball clinics in Douglas County

A youth volleyball clinic is set for Aug. 1-4 at the community center in Gardnerville. Dan Hannah and Rick Jenkins are the principal instructors.

The clinic is open to boys and girls in grades four through eight as of September.

The beginner level clinic is from 8 to 10 a.m. and costs $50. The sixth and seventh-grade clinic is $75 and runs from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. They’re looking for eighth graders with one year experience and sixth and seventh-graders with two years experience. The competitive clinic is from 1 to 3 p.m. and costs $75. This one is for players with two or more years of athletic experience, anybody who played for a middle school team last year and anybody who wants to play for a club team.

Flag football signups coming up

Signups for the Talents Carson City NFL Flag Football League will be held from Aug. 8 through 26. The league will be for boys and girls ages 10 to 13 (9-year-olds may also be accepted).

Beginning Aug. 8 those interested will be able to go to http://carsoncitynflflagfootballleague.siplay.com/site/ to sign up. Players must also sign up at https://www.nflflag.com/form/player. Coaches must also sign up at https://www.nflflag.com/form/coach.
