Education achievements: Fernley student presented scholarship

Fernley Republican Women presented a $1,000 scholarship to Kailanee Young Reyes at the Fernley High School Senior Awards Night on May 24.

Reyes plans to attend the University of Nevada, Reno to obtain a Master of Science in Nursing while working in a health care setting. She plans to continue her education and become a labor and delivery nurse or an obstetrician.

Carson students awarded scholarships

Carson City residents Jesica Cacho, Fabiola Mata-Garcia, McKenzie Peterson, Michelle Powers and Austin Lowe were each recently awarded a $2,000 scholarship from Greater Nevada Credit Union.

Cacho, Mata-Garcia, and Peterson plan to attend Western Nevada College; Powers plans to attend the University of Nevada, Reno, and Lowe plans to attend Boise State University.

This year, 88 students applied for scholarships from Greater Nevada Credit Union, and 20 students total were selected to each receive $2,000 for the 2016-2017 school year. Nearly $300,000 has been awarded to students since Greater Nevada began its academic scholarship program 17 years ago.

The program is available to Greater Nevada members and their families. Scholarships are awarded based on each applicant’s financial need, academic performance, community involvement, and educational and career goals.

Students graduate from University of Montana Western

Five area students recently graduated from the University of Montana Western.

Kage K. Walker of Dayton graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education.

Alyssa Lane Haugen of Fallon graduated with an Associate of Applied Science in Education Studies.

Fernley’s Alfonso Jose Estrada graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education; and Lonnie Tyree graduated with an Associate of Science.

Madeline Mary Hull-Taylor of Yerington graduated with an Associate of Applied Science in Education Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education.

Carson natives make President’s List

Callen Aten and Mia Cavilia of Carson City made the President’s List for the spring semester at Gonzaga University.

To make the list, students must earn a 3.7 to 4.0 grade-point average.
