Carson City citizens panel on streets sets meeting

Carson City’s citizens panel on maintenance of city streets is ready to meet.

The Transportation Resource Advisory Forum of Carson City, or TRAFCC, will hold its first meeting at 5:30 p.m. June 23 at the Fuji Park expo center, Patrick Pittenger, Public Works transportation manager, told the Regional Transportation Commission Wednesday.

Public Works posted an application to serve on the forum at its website in May and received 11 applications for 10 openings.

All four wards are represented by at least one public member, said Pittenger.

The remaining members are made of representatives from 12 local organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce, Builders Association of Western Nevada, Northern Nevada Development Authority, Nevada Division of Transportation and Carson City’s Planning Commission, School District, and Visitors Bureau.

The Adams Hub was invited to participate but declined.

The group will meet monthly through December.

The goal is to educate the public on the city’s streets maintenance projects and the funding sources for them, and for members to provide feedback to city staff on how they would prioritize the work.

The meetings are public and attendees will have an opportunity to make pubic comment, but because the forum is only advising staff the meetings are not subject to open meeting law.

The first meeting will be an overview of funding and projects and Elie Hajj, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno, has been invited to give a presentation on pavement at the second meeting.

A new traffic signal at the intersection of College Parkway and Research Way is on track to be installed this summer.

The project is a joint effort between the city and the Maverik gas station on the corner.

The gas station plans to put in diesel pumps for trucks in the adjacent lot to the south of the existing gas station so the city is first requiring the installation of a signal at the already busy corner.

Maverik and the city are splitting the cost of the $475,000 project.

The signal should be installed in time for Street Vibrations, the motorcycle event in late September that draws hundreds of bikers to special events at the recently reopened motorcycle dealer now called Battle Born Harley-Davidson at the end of Research.

In other business, the RTC approved a contract not to exceed $479,607.70 with Sierra Nevada Construction, Inc.

The contractor will be reconstructing Goni Road between Boeing Way and Kelvin Road and Convair Drive between Arrowhead Drive and Boeing.

The RTC also approved an interlocal agreement between Carson City and the Board of Regents, Nevada System of Higher Education, on behalf of UNR for $40,000 for technical assistance with the Carson City Pavement Management System, an inventory of roads and improvements and performance model.

Prior to the RTC meeting, Carson Area Metropolitan Planning Organization met and approved a $75,000 contract with Kimley-Horn for on-call travel demand forecasting.

CAMPO also added five projects to its transportation improvement program, a prioritized listing of transportation projects covering a period of four years.

The additional projects include the Sierra Vista Lane FLAP grant project, the transfer of funds to Carson City for the South Carson Street resurfacing from Fairview Drive to U.S. 50/Spooner Junction, and a micro surfacing and patching project for South Carson from Fairview to Overland Street.
