150 years ago

Nevada’s Additional Territory: Chauncey Noteware, Esq., Secretary of State, has received form Congressman Ashley, a land office map, upon which is roughly but carefully and correctly sketched the outlines of territory which has been added to this state upon our eastern and southeastern borders. The new strip embraces some 28,000 square miles, which, added to the old aggregate, gives us an area of some 109,589 square miles.

The new fence: The fence-making machine at Meder’s old paint shop still attracts numerous visitors. It turns out about 600 feet of woven wire and slat fence daily, and is pronounced by all who use it to be the best thing of the kind ever offered for sale.

100 years ago

Ormsby County makes the best showing of any county in the state in the collection of taxes. County Clerk Dan Morton reports that there will be only about three delinquents this year, the Wells Fargo Express company and taxes on two pieces of mountain lands, checks which are expected in today. The total amount due on the last installment of taxes for 1916 was $23,243.

70 years ago

Predicting that when a census count is made of Carson City in 1950 it would be a city of well over 5,000 residents, District Attorney Frank Gregory and recently acting secretary of the Carson Housing Authority, reported to Rotarians at the Hot Springs. Gregory said that only the lack of adequate housing is keeping it from becoming a city of second class proportions.

So extensive were the archeological discoveries during the Nevada State Museum’s 1965 excavations at Pyramid Lake that the Max C. Fleischmann Foundation has made an additional grant of $19,789.47 to extend the study through this summer.

Gerald Crane, who won best daily columnist in 1984 for his sketches on prison life, left the Northern Nevada Correctional Center Friday, a free man for the first time since 1975.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
