Education acheivements: Carson High School graduate awarded scholarship

Terek Davis Been, a 2016 Carson High School graduate, was recently awarded a $1,500 scholarship from Sierra Nevada Ear, Nose & Throat (SNENT). Been, who plans on attending the University of Toronto in the fall, earned the scholarship with an essay about why he’s interested in studying science. He gives much of that credit to his teachers at Carson High School, who he says nurtured his passion.

Been will study biochemistry with plans to go into pathology or onto medical school after completing his under-grad work. He says the scholarship is good for him for many reasons.

SNENT’s Dr. Paul Manoukian and Dr. K. Brian Romaneschi have awarded more than $33,000 in scholarships over the past 11 years to local high school seniors pursuing advanced education in healthcare.

Soroptimist International of the Comstock awards scholarships

Soroptimist International of the Comstock recently presented $500 scholarships to Jordan Seddon of Virginia City High School, Halee Gahr of Silver Stage High School and Madison deWet of Dayton High School.

The scholarships were given based on the students’ applications, academics and their desire to help their communities.

Carson City woman graduates from Tulane University

Tulane University in New Orleans awarded degrees to nearly 3,000 graduates, including Carson City’s Laura Sosa.

Sosa graduated from the Freeman School of Business with a Master of Accounting degree, and Freeman School of Business with a Bachelor Science Management degree.

Area natives make Dean’s List

Carson City’s Rachel Miles made the Dean’s List at Carroll College in Helena, Mont.

Miles and other students on the list received a 3.5 grade-point average or higher on a 4.0 scale with at least 12 graded credits.

The University of Montana Western in Dillon, Mont., also named area natives — Rebecca Connett of Dayton, Alyssa Haugen of Fallon, Alfonso Estrada and Erik Wilson of Fernley, and Madeline Hull-Taylor of Yerington — to its Dean’s List.

The students were listed because they earned at least a 3.33 grade-point average with 12 semester credits.
