Western Nevada College’s Adult Literacy and Language program celebrated the success of its High School Equivalency recipients on Friday, June 17.

Family and friends looked on as 75 men and women received HSE certificates during the ceremony at the Carson Nugget Community Hall on WNC’s campus in Carson City.

“All recipients attending the celebration were enrolled in the Adult Literacy & Language program and received preparation either through a Boot Camp, ongoing classes and/or tutoring,” said Angela Holt, WNC’s AL&L program Coordinator and HSE Testing Chief Examiner.

Holt said 133 people passed at least one of the HSE exams after preparing for testing through WNC’s program.

“Of those, 59 RSVP’d to attend the celebration, and that’s a record-breaker for us,” Holt said.

Welcoming remarks were provided by Brad Deeds, state HSE administrator, and John Kinkella, WNC’s Dean of Student Services, presented a scholarship award. HSE alum Steve Wright spoke to the students as well.

The evening included induction of new members into the National Adult Education Honor Society. Those 15 honorees were Raquel Camacho, Silvia Flores, Leonel Gonzalez, Alejandra Gutierrez, Ok Kim, Sabrina Lathrop, Linn Lawrence, Elvira Madera, Maria Meda, Martha Membreno, Francisco Javier Murillo, Kareyling Rugama-Herrera, Premlata Singh, Daniel Vasquez and Steve Wright.

WNC’s Adult Literacy and Language program honored six English Language Learners who passed a Certified Nursing Assistant class during the spring semester. They are Socorro Ampudia, Guadalupe Marroquin, Blanca Ramirez, Samanta Ramirez, Carolina Sanchez and Claudia Aguilar Torres. One graduate has already been hired at Carson Tahoe Hospital and the others are in the process of taking their certification exams to become licensed CNAs, who assist Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses with patient care.

“This must be a prime example of what is possible the way the education system is set up at WNC” said Jody Coxon, an AL&L instructional specialist. “It is vital that students learn the language to continue with their education and be successful in their chosen area of work.”

Coxon said the students’ commitment to WNC’s Adult Literacy & Language program will continue.

“As a result of taking the CNA class, completing clinical experience and studying for State of Nevada licensure, some of the students have verbally committed to continuing their English classes with the Adult Literacy and Language program,” Coxon said. “The students now realize that being proficient in two languages will provide them with additional opportunities for advancement within the field of health care. A few of the CNA students also have the goal of continuing their education and becoming licensed practical or registered nurses, which will require additional education at WNC.”

Besides English Language Learning classes and HSE preparation, WNC’s AL&L program provides workforce readiness classes to adults who are striving to improve their skills and education to better their quality of life.

“All classes incorporate the skills necessary to transition to college and the workplace,” Holt said. “The AL&L program provides adult learners with pathways to college and careers.”
