Carson takes two to open tourney

RENO — The Carson Blue Jays won two games to open the North Valleys-Spanish Springs tournament on Friday at North Valleys.

The Blue Jays knocked off Ponderosa, 10-7, and then came back from a 12-4 deficit to knock off Fernley, 13-12.

Carson moved to 19-7 and continues play with two more tournament games today.

The Carson-Ponderosa game was tied at 2 entering the bottom of the third. The Blue Jays scored four in the third and two in the fourth to make it 8-2. Ponderosa scored four times in the fifth to make it 8-6, but the Blue Jays scored two to make it 10-6.

Kahle Good hit a two-run double and Abel Carter hit a solo homer in the third. Bryce Moyle hit a solo homer in the fifth with the second run scoring on a fielder’s choice and singles by Jared Barnard and Brandon Gagnon.

Colby Zemp picked up the win, going four innings and giving up six of Ponderosa’s seven runs. Ben Nelson gave up one run and two hits in his two-inning stint to pick up the save.

Moyle went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, while Jesse Lopez, Barnard, Good and Carter added two hits each.

In the win over Fernley, the Blue Jays found themselves in a 12-4 hole entering the bottom of the sixth. Carson exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game before winning it in the seventh.

The big hits were two-run singles by Trevor Edis and Joe Tonino. The latter’s hit tied the game at 12. Carter came on to pitch the seventh and blanked the Vaqueros.

Carter was rewarded with the win in the bottom of the seventh. He was hit by a pitch and scored on Edis’ game-winning single.

Edis, Carter, Tonino and Landon Truesdale collected two hits apiece. Carter and Tonino drove in two runs and Edis had three RBI.
