Carson City Little League scored five runs after two outs in the first inning, and then held on to beat Reno Continental, 7-4, Wednesday night in the opening round of the District 1 11-12 all-star tournament at Governors Field.

Carson plays Centennial A tonight at 7:30 on Field 2.

“This was a complete team effort,” said coach Joe Tierney. “It’s what we’ve been preaching. Kids stepped up.

“Eddie (Tierney) didn’t really have it tonight (on the mound). Wes Simpson came up big in the first inning. His homer set the tempo for that first inning.”

Eddie Tierney was touched for a run and two hits in the top of the first. It would be Reno’s first and last lead of the game.

Reno starter Cal Scolari retired the first two hitters he faced, but plunked Tierney. Simpson followed with a towering homer over the fence in left-centerfield. Tanner Hunt and Cameron Boeckman walked. Alan Mayoral singled to load the bases. Luke Pederson reached on an error, and two runs scored to make it 4-1. A.J. Kunter also reached on an error allowing the fifth run to score.

The score stayed 5-1 until the bottom of the fourth when Pederson singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Dillon Damico walked. Eddie Tierney followed with a double to the wall in left-centerfield to score both runners for a 7-1 lead.

Scolari hit a two-run homer in the fifth to make it 7-3. Tierney worked out of a first-and-second situation later in the inning.

In the sixth, Reno knocked Tierney out of the box with a single by Rocco Granieri and a double by Rex Thoreson. Kaden Schuck followed with a sacrifice fly against reliever Tanner Hunt to make it 7-4. Hunt struck out two of the next three hitters to end the game.

Carson was outhit 7-4 in the game. Reno’s Archie Smith had a double and single in a losing effort.
