Senator Square: A photo is worth a thousand words

Everyone is on a metaphorical road to another destination every single moment of every single day from sunup to sunup again, and what is done along the way leaves a lasting imprint on both the doer and the receiver. Like Karsen Law, an unexpected winner in the SkillsUSA photo competition, the students of Carson High School are continuously coming up with the unexpected and creating memorable opportunities for not only students to participate but the Carson City community as well. Anyone, whether it be students, parents, grandparents, or even former CHS students and their children may participate in these unforgettable events.

PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION WINNER

CHS sophomore Photo II student Karsen Law is the only student to compete in the SkillsUSA photography competition against 25 other Northern Nevada students in order to advance to SkillsUSA’s state competition where students will compete alongside Southern Nevada students in hopes of moving on to Nationals in Kentucky. This is Karsen’s and his photography teacher Kara Ferrin’s first attempt at competing in SkillsUSA; however, Karsen not only advanced onto State with 15 other students, but he also won third place overall. Mrs. Ferrin is proud of Karsen’s accomplishments as they agreed to go into regionals with the mentality that it would simply be a learning experience in order to compete stronger next year. Ferrin says, “I cannot wait to see how he does alongside students from all over Nevada and potentially the country.”

SPEECH AND DEBATE WINNERS

CHS Speech and Debate wrapped up league competition at Bishop Manogue High School. Alek Henrickson and Baliee Barber took fourth and third in senior Lincoln Douglas speaker points on the topic of banning handguns, Evan Cherpeski and Sandro Figueroa took fourth and third in speaker points for senior Public Forum debate and third overall debating the merits of a carbon tax. Sandro also claimed third place overall in senior storytelling. The team finished the regular season stronger than ever before claiming four sweepstakes bowls. Carson claimed third place in duo interpretation and third place in Congressional debate. The team also won the second place Humorous Interpretation bowl and second place in impromptu speaking. This is the third year in a row Carson has taken the first or second place bowl in impromptu. By degrees earned, the team sits in fourth place in the league. Last weekend Jesse Session also competed in the regional level of the Lions Club speaking contest and took second place. The team competes at State in Elko next weekend.

HONORS & ADVANCED PLACEMENT INFORMATION PARENT NIGHT

Honors & AP Parent Night will take place at 6 p.m. Monday in the CHS Library. This event is designed to inform families about the benefits of honors & AP courses, receiving college credit while still at CHS, and how these classes affect GPA. Parents will also meet the teachers of these courses in order to discuss curriculum, qualifications and rigor needed to succeed. Questions? Call 775-283-1915.

CHS FATHER-DAUGHTER DANCE

The 2nd Annual Father-Daughter Dance will take place from 6-9 p.m. April 8 at CHS. This year’s theme is “Once Upon a Time Enchanted Forest Ball.” Any and all ages of father-daughters are welcome to attend, and tickets may be purchased at the CHS front office from 2-4 p.m. each day. Tickets are $30 per father/daughter couple, $10 for each additional daughter, and they are also available through the mail by sending a check to Carson High School, c/o Angila Golik, P.O. Box 603, Carson City, 89701. Professional photos will be available at the dance for an additional cost. Greater Nevada Credit Union Branch at Carson High is giving away $500 of Prom Awesomeness! The prize winner will receive two Prom Tickets, dinner at Glen Eagles, Tux Rental, $200 Dillard’s gift card, a prom flower package and hair up-do. STUDENT OF THE WEEK

This week’s student of the week is Raul Lopez. Raul always has a positive attitude and is always kind to his classmates and peers. He continues to impress his teachers with the way he carries himself both on the soccer field and in the classroom. CHS thanks Raul for all of his hard work and dedication!

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week’s senior spotlight is on Tess Corda, who currently has a GPA of 4.14 which reflects the fact that she has challenged herself with AP English and loads of honors courses since freshman year. This has earned her academic letters and membership for the past two years in NHS. In addition to NHS, Tess has been in Link Crew the past three years and played tennis in her freshman and sophomore years. Outside of school, Tess dances competitively with the Western Nevada Performing Arts Center. Dancing since the age of 3, and competing since she was 5, her dance style has spanned the spectrum from jazz to tap to hip hop and more, and she and her team have won awards in a number of competitions; they have even had the privilege of performing at Disneyland on two occasions and also on a cruise to Mexico where the team performed for the passengers. Tess plans on attending UNLV in the fall and wants to pursue a career in nursing. She’s also scheduled to try out for the UNLV dance team in May where she has an excellent chance of getting accepted as she has already been to Las Vegas this past year and worked out with the team. Tess will be successful in both her academic and personal pursuits. Congratulations to Tess on her many accomplishments.
