150 Years Ago

Sazerac saloon. A brand new floor of tongued, grooved and dove-tailed floor has been laid in the saloon. The walls painted and whitewashed and repair of the entire bar has taken place. Tomorrow their Honors, Judges Reese and Pierce, will deal out the spirit of justice to the practitioners at the bar. Jim Gray has worked so hard he has worn all the hair off his head.

130 Years Ago

Good times coming. The Appeal believes an era of prosperity is dawning. This is based on several factors. First will be the war of transcontinental freights and fares, wages have been going down, while the cost of living has been about the same, the departure of the Chinese from the coast, state lands are being taken up and converted into pasturage and cultivated. All that is needed to make this state the equal of any in the union is a larger area of country devoted to grass and tree planting. The state cannot be advanced by people sitting on their haunches and waiting for Eastern capital.

110 Years Ago

Good Templars. Jonas Bushell will lecture at the Methodist church on temperance and matters relating to the I.O.G.T. (International Order of Good Templars). Everybody is invited to attend and admission is free. It is declared to be a very entertaining lecture of interest to many.

70 Years Ago

Carson Ski Club. To boost the Spooner summit ski area so that it will be comparable to such snow resorts as the Mt. Rose Bowl and the Donner summit area, a drive by the Carson Ski Club will be initiated. A campaign to raise sufficient money to install a tow in the Spooner area will be discussed.

50 Years Ago

Lund memorial. A petrified forest adjacent to State Highway 34 north of Gerlach has been named in honor of George W. Lund. The petrified forest contains remnants of Sequoia trees which were scattered around ancient Lake Lahontan thousands of years ago. Lund, who died in 1964, spent years working for the enactment of Federal legislation to protect deposits of petrified wood on public land as well as other natural resources.

20 Years Ago

Parking enforcement. Parking fines may jump from $10 to $15 for parking longer than two hours in a two-hour spot.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
