Senators pummel Hawks

RENO — Save for one game, the Carson High-Hug yearly baseball series has been lopsided.

In the past six games, five won by Carson, the Senators have outscored the Hawks, 82-6. It was no different in Tuesday’s Northern Division I opener.

The Senators used 15 hits and 13 walks to roll to an easy 24-3 win, extending their season win streak to five straight games and to six straight over the Hawks. The game was stopped after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Connor Pradere, Cody Azevedo, Kyle Krebs, Abel Carter, Bryce Moyle and Jesse Lopez all had two hits. Krebs and Lopez drove in four runs apiece, while Moyle added three. Azevedo, Terek Been and Carter drove in two apiece.

“I think Hug has improved,” CHS coach Bryan Manoukian said. “They got some (four) hits off Bryce (Moyle). They need their pitchers to throw more strikes.”

“It’s hard to focus and stay in games like this,” Krebs said.

Carson set the tone early, scoring four times on just two hits. Pradere walked, stole second and third, and scored on a wild pitch. A double steal accounted for the second run, and Moyle and Jace Keema drove in a run apiece to conclude the early barrage.

Moyle gave up a walk and stolen base to Matt Nielson, and then picked Nielson off second. After a strikeout, Payton Smith singled, stole second and scored on a single by Angel Reyes. Cesar Valenzuela singled Reyes to third, but both were stranded when Moyle fanned Ricky Gonzalez to end the first inning.

Moyle breezed through the next two innings, and went 41 pitches. He’s expected to start Saturday’s game at Reed.

“Bryce was right where he needed to be,” Manoukian said. “This was Cody’s first action. He came out late from basketball, and we’re trying to get his arm in shape. Today was essentially a bullpen (session) for Bryce.”

In the second, Carson pushed its lead to 6-1 when Krebs unloaded on a Nielson fastball and sent it over the fence in left-centerfield. The blow scored Pradere, who had reached on the second of his three walks.

“It (the pitch) was down the middle,” Krebs said. “I put a good swing on it.”

It got worse for the Hawks in the third, Carson sent 20 batters to the plate, scoring 16 runs on seven hits, nine walks and a hit batter to take a 22-1 lead.

Lopez led the onslaught with a two-run single and two-run triple, Been singled home two runs, Azevedo drove in two runs with a walk and hit, Carter singled home a run and Pradere doubled home a run. Other runs scored on walks and/or hit batsmen.

Krebs, normally a right-handed batter, turned around to the left side and hit a run-scoring single in the fourth and Carter added another RBI single.

Azevedo pitched a scoreless fourth and yielded two unearned runs in the fifth.

DAMONTE 7, DOUGLAS 6

RENO — Damonte Ranch defeated Douglas, 7-6, Tuesday afternoon in the Northern Division I conference opener for both teams.

Damonte Ranch is now 3-3 overall. Douglas is 1-5. The Mustangs pushed across two runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-6 lead that stood the rest of the way.
