Local roundup: Carson boys take third; Hawley sets school record

FALLON — Carson High’s boys track team finished third at the 44th annual Fallon Elks Invitational on Saturday.

Reed won the boys title with 125 points, three better than McQueen. Carson finished with 64 points, 10 better than Douglas. Dayton was sixth with 38 points. Reed won the girls title with 101 points, 12 better than McQueen. Douglas was eighth with 33, Carson was 14th with 21 and Dayton was 18th with 6.5.

Ian Schulz won the shot with a throw of 155 feet 2 inches, and he was second in the shot put with a throw of 55-2 3/4, a PR. Asa Carter won the triple jump with a leap of 44-1 1/2, took fifth in the long jump at 20-2 and was seventh in the 300 hurdles in 43.77. Greg Wallace was second in the high jump at 6-4, while Dylan Mayo was third in the long jump at 39-9 1/2.

“Asa had a good day,” CHS coach Robert Maw said. “He had two jumps over 46 feet, but was a tad over (the board). I was really pleased with the boys overall. We had a couple of kids missing due to the holiday break.”

The Dayton boys were led by J.J. Ply, Brady Heusser and Zach Hawley.

Ply was second in the pole vault at 14-6, third in the 100 hurdles (45.63) and fifth in the 300 hurdles (43.63). Hawley won the shot put with a school-record heave of 59-5 3/4 and took third in the discus at 146-6. Heusser was fifth in the 1600 (4:40.72). Ply had PRs in all three events and tied the school record in the pole vault. Hawley set a school record in the shot put. The old mark was 57-9.

“J.J. had a really good day,” Dayton coach Mike Paul said. “He tied his brother’s school record in the pole vault. Zach had a good day in the shot.”

On the girls side, Carson’s Athena Favero was second in the 300 hurdles (47.34), sixth in the 100 hurdles (17.66) and fourth in the 200 (27.30). Ashley Britt was eighth in the 300 hurdles (52.46), while Blanca Sosa was ninth in the 1600 (5:41.17) and 10th in the 800 (2:34.9).

“Athena hit the sixth hurdle hard and that took her out of the race,” Maw said. “She was contending for a top spot until then.”

Freshman Grace Wells was sixth in the 400 for Dayton (65.79) and Rebecca Mason was seventh in the high jump (4-8). Nancy Cid was seventh in the pole vault at 7-6.

VARSITY GIRLS SOFTBALL

CHS girls lose twice

SPARKS — The Senators closed out play in the Reed Easter Invitational with losses to James Logan-Union City, 6-0, and Spanish Springs, 6-1, Saturday afternoon.

Carson finished the tourney with a 2-4 record.

Logan scored three in the first and one in the second off Jailene Salcedo. Lauren Lemburg threw the last four innings, allowing two runs.

“Lauren did a good job of hitting her spots,” coach Shane Quilling said.

Julisa Patino and Camille Rodriguez threw three innings apiece. Bailey Allen, Camiell Simpson, Nicole Brown, Gabbi Winder, Lemburg and Faith Bigelow all singled.

The closest Carson came to a score was the fourth when it put runners on first and third with one out. Rodriguez struck out Kassidy Cooley and got Salciedo on an infield roller to end the threat.

Carson gave up three runs on homers in the Logan game.

Spanish Springs slugged two homers to account for four of its six runs. Kourtney Townsend and winning pitcher Amidori Anderson each hit two-run homers.

Anderson pitched six innings allowing six singles. Allen, Simpson, Brown, Cooley, Winder and Elise Brady had a hit apiece.

“We played pretty well; better than yesterday,” Quilling said. “We competed well and didn’t hurt ourselves in the field. We’re getting better.”

Spring Creek sweeps Dayton

ELKO — The Dust Devils fell to 0-6 in league play after being swept by Spring Creek.

The Spartans won 18-0, 13-3 and 22-5.

Wildcats get swept

EPHRAIM, Utah — Three-run homers were not Western Nevada College pitchers’ friend on Saturday afternoon during a Scenic West Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Snow College.

Alyssa Arslanian belted a go-ahead three-run shot in the fifth inning of a 9-4 first-game victory and Bailey Vigil’s three-run blow with two outs in the sixth inning completed a doubleheader sweep, 3-2, in Ephraim, Utah.

“In both games we felt we had control,” said WNC coach Leah Wentworth. “It was just two innings that killed us. We gave them an opportunity to creep in and take control.”

WNC freshman pitcher McKell Marble was working on a four-hit shutout entering the bottom of the sixth inning of the second game.

“It was her best outing,” Wentworth said. “She had good control of the hitters, good movement on her pitches. McKell did a good job of holding down an offense that was really productive in the first game.”

Given an extra out in the sixth, the Badgers delivered a winning rally. Arslanian stroked a one-out single and went to third when Carley Guymon reached on an error. Vigil sent a 3-2 pitch from Marble over the left-field fence for the game-winner.

Snow delivered four extra-base hits, including a pair of homers, in the fifth and sixth innings to rally to win Game 1.

Arslanian’s second homer of the game erased WNC’s 4-2 lead in the fifth. A walk to Emily Street and a MaKenzie Simons base hit preceded Arslanian’s three-run shot.

WNC slipped to 5-11 in SWAC play and 10-17 overall. Snow improved to 9-7 and 13-9, respectively.

The Wildcats will return home to meet College of Southern Nevada on Friday and Saturday at Edmonds Sports Complex.

“Our next three series are at home,” Wentworth said. “It’s a good opportunity to get comfortable at home.”
