150 Years Ago

Foot racing. A foot race took place at the Carson Course for a distance of a quarter of a mile for $10 a side. Henry Kraus led off in fine style, but was soon flabbergasted and spavined, and with evident affliction of the “lifts” he broke down, leg-wear and blown. Mat Pixley came up, passed Henry and won. No time kept.

All sorts. Buffalo Bill’s show is the veriest rot ever put on the boards, but it is well advertised and rolls in a fortune for Bill. The Raycraft Brothers in Genoa are building a new public hall for the use of its citizens.

110 Years Ago

Fine ore. Guy Guinan and George Sieberst came down from their claims near Lake Tahoe. They brought 100 pounds of very fine copper ore. Rich float has been found from time to time, but it seems to be the nearest to a ledge yet exposed. All they want now is good weather.

80 Years Ago

Advertisement. “Carson Café — between Appeal Office and Carson Chronicle — American and Chinese dishes, try our electrical baked waffle and drip coffee — 25 cents; lunches and dinners — 35 cents and up; 12 different entrees and roast to choose from every day; steak and chop suey our specialty — booths for Ladies.”

Red Cross report. Gov. Grant Sawyer accepted a report of Red Cross activities in Nevada for 1965 from Walter Dixon of Reno, volunteer chairman of the Sierra-Nevada Red Cross Chapter. Dixon told the Governor the Nevada Red Cross trained 6,459 people in safety and first aid and gave $58,459 in financial aid to 5,447 Nevada servicemen, veterans and their families.

Photo caption. Carson High work program JOIN gives some students $200 to buy clothes. Eleven special-education teenagers are in Carson High’s work program and have jobs that entail working several hours each week.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
