HENDERSON — Carson Perkins limited Carson High to two hits over five innings to lead Vauxhall Academy-Canada to a 5-1 win on the opening day of the Bishop Gorman Easter Invitational Wednesday morning.
Carson returns to action today against host Bishop Gorman at 3:30 p.m. The Senators are 8-4 overall.
The Senators didn’t start Bryce Moyle, Connor Pradere and Kyle Krebs. Bryan Manoukian, CHS coach, said he wanted to give other players an opportunity to get some playing time.
Perkins was dominant, striking out nine and walking three. He threw 73 pitches, 44 for strikes, in his stint. Jalen Lane finished up with two scoreless innings, including three strikeouts.
“Their pitcher was really good,” Manoukian said. “He threw faster than we’ve seen all year. We didn’t do a good job up there, especially with two strikes. He had a good curveball.”
Carson’s only score came in the second when John Holton reached on an error, advanced to second on a single by Abel Carter and to third on a walk to Nico Salm. Trevor Edis walked to force home a run, but Perkins escaped further damage by striking out Jared Barnard and Brandon Gagnon.
Holton worked 4.1 innings, allowing all five Vauxhall runs.
Only three of those tallies were earned.
Vauxhall scored twice in the first on three hits, including doubles by Jordan Malainey and Jordan Dray. After Carson cut the lead to 2-1, Vauxhall tallied two more in the third, after two out, on Victor Cerny’s two-run double. Dray drove in the Canadian team’s final run in the fifth.
“I thought John threw very well,” Manoukian said. “He made a couple of bad pitches in the first inning and in the third he lost focus a bit and walked a guy and hit a guy.”
Carter went 2-for-3 to lead Carson. Terek Been and Krebs, in a pinch-hitting role, had the other CHS hits.
