Prep roundup: Big day for Pradere, Schulz

SACRAMENTO — Abby Pradere and Ian Schulz turned in outstanding performances Saturday at the prestigious Meet of Champions at American River College.

Pradere, a freshman, won the 1600 in 5:07.7, a Carson record for freshmen. The time is the best in the region and tied for second in the state. The talented freshman came back and ran in the 800 invitational race, clocking a 2:14.5 en route to a fifth-place finish.

Schulz threw a PR and school record of 170-1 to finish second in the discus. He also beat area rival Zach Hawley, who finished fifth with a 160-3 effort. Schulz had an impressive series of 160-3, 164-8, 165-11, 163-7, 157-7 and 170-1. The throw was approximately 40 feet better than his 131-foot effort at the Carson Invitational.

“He had a good day, which is what I expected after a good week of throwing,” Carson throwing coach Mike Louisiana said. “He had a sub-par competition last week. Today was a coming out for him,”

Asa Carter went 45-8 in the triple jump en route to a second-place finish and Athena Favero ran a season-best 46.24 in the open 300 hurdles to place fourth. She injured her ankle and ran a 27.51 in the 200. Ian Van Rensselaer took ninth in the 800 with a season-best 1:58.62 effort. Chris Miranda threw the discus 135-9.

Dayton’s J.J. Ply won the high jump with a leap of 6-5 and he was 12th in the 110 high hurdles (15.47).

Wallace wins at Big George

MINDEN — Greg Wallace cleared 6-feet 2-inches to win the high jump at the Big George Invitational Saturday at Douglas High School.

“It was OK (our performance),” Carson head coach Robert Maw said. “We had some PRs. Erica Basa had a PR in the triple jump and finished fourth.”

Brandon Basa was fourth in the 400 (52.69) and Logan Menzel was sixth in the discus (133-3) and ninth in the shot put (42-9 1/2). Blanca Sosa was sixth in the 1600 (5:37.94) and Abby Paulson was sixth in the triple jump (32-11 1/2).

For Dayton, Rebecca Mason tied for second in the high jump at 4-8, Grace Wells was fifth in the 400 (64.42), and Zaria Landis was third in the 1600 (5:28.66) and ninth in the 800 (2:34.86). Brady Heusser was fifth in the 1600 and sixth in the 3200.

Sierra Lutheran’s Abby Ferenz tied for second in the high jump (4-8), Alyssa Rowe was third in the shot at 32-8. and Kristy Missamore was fifth in the discus at 102-11. Blake Ranalla was sixth in the triple jump at 39-9 1/2.

VARSITY BASEBALL

Dayton, Fallon split

DAYTON — The Dust Devils and Fallon split their 1A doubleheader Saturday. Dayton won the opener 5-3 and the Greenwave avoided a series sweep with an 11-9 win in the nightcap.

“After winning the first two games, we really wanted a sweep,” Dayton coach Mike Burrows said. “Three walks and an error in the seventh proved to be the difference in the game that went back and forth. We as a staff were pleased with the effort and focus in all phases of the game.

“After yesterday’s slugfest the winds changed direction and we got back to real baseball. Trevor (Burrows) had a great outing and we made the most of our seven hits.”

Burrows went the distance, allowing six hits and striking out eight.

After Dylan Baker drove in two in the first, tying the game at 2, Burrows singled in a run in the second and Nick Hein had a run-scoring hit in the third to give Dayton a quick 5-2 lead. Burrows, Baker and Hein all had two hits in the win.

In the nightcap, Baker had a two-run homer and RBI single to spark Dayton to a 5-4 lead after three. Fallon knotted the game at 6 and then went ahead 7-6 before Baker tied the game with a solo homer. Fallon scored four in the seventh and then held off a Dayton comeback.

Baker, Jesse Schmidt and Zach Woitas all had two hits.

Tigers sweep North Valleys

MINDEN — Haydn Brown and Tanner Valenzuela turned in complete game pitching performances to help Douglas sweep a doubleheader from North Valleys and keep its playoff hopes alive.

Brown pitched a seven-hitter with eight strikeouts to win the opener, 5-1, then Valenzuela twirled a five-hit shutout to win game two, 6-0.

Douglas (13-16 overall, 9-11 league) moved to within a single game of McQueen and Reed (both 10-10) for seventh- and eighth-place in the Northern Division I standings. Eight teams advance to the region tournament in two weeks.

Ayden Murphy and Brown collected three hits and two RBI each to lead Douglas offensively in game two. Haden Keller collected two hits in the opener against North Valleys (4-19, 3-17).

VARSITY SOFTBALL

Carson loses two tough ones

SPARKS — The Senators played two strong games, but were still swept by Spanish Springs, 3-0 and 4-1, Saturday afternoon.

In the opener, the game was scoreless until the fourth when the Cougars pushed across a run, Spanish Springs added two more in the sixth to close it out. Lauren Lemburg threw well, allowing one earned run and four hits,

Carson managed just three hits off Fein, who struck out nine and walked two. Lemburg, Bailey Allen and Gabbi Winder hit safely for Carson.

Fein also pitched the nightcap for Spanish Springs, allowing four hits while striking out eight. Kourtney Townsend drove in two runs for the Cougars, who tallied once in the third and three times in the fifth.

Cat Linkul was hit by a pitch in the sixth to force across Carson’s lone run. Winder led Carson with two hits while Faith Bigelow and Allen added one each.

Despite the two losses, Carson coach Shane Quilling was happy with the way his team played.

“We probably played the best we have all year,” Quilling said. “I’m thinking we were going up there and get 10-runned twice, but we battled and played with a lot of heart.

“Spanish Springs is a good team. Lauren pitched very well today, That first game, Spanish Springs hit one, maybe two balls to the outfield.”

Carson played without outfielders Elise Brady and Terryn Earle, forcing Quilling to bring up a JV player.

Fallon sweeps Dayton

DAYTON — The Greenwave rolled to a pair of mercy rule wins over Dayton on Saturday.

Fallon won the opener 19-3 and won 14-0 in the second game.

Briana Hill went 2-for-2 in the opener with a double, and Aleeah Rowe went 1-for-3 with a homer and two RBI. Dayton managed just one hit in the second game, a double by Howe in the fourth inning.

Douglas, Damonte split

MINDEN — Shaena Robinson hit a two-run single with two outs in the sixth inning as Douglas rallied for an 8-7 win against Damonte Ranch to salvage a doubleheader split against Damonte Ranch on Saturday.

Damonte Ranch won the opener, 8-6, after scoring two runs in the sixth inning to break a 6-all tie. The Mustangs escaped from a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh to hold on for the win.

Douglas (14-13 overall, 10-8 league) and Damonte Ranch (13-11, 10-8 league) remained tied for sixth-place in the Northern Division I standings. Galena, McQueen and Bishop Manogue are one game ahead, all at 11-7.

In game two, Casey Peck hit 3-for-4 with a home run and double. Robinson went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Bennett 2-for-3.

Amanda Hoffman pitched the distance to pick up the win. The sophomore allowed seven runs (two earned) on 10 hits while walking none. She registered seven strikeouts.

Maddie Miramon hit a leadoff home run to spark the Mustangs’ four-run second inning.

In game one, Damonte Ranch pitcher Ally Young preserved a two-run lead with the bases loaded when second baseman Makaylah Tuxon came up with a backhanded stop of Allison Meyer’s hard-hit ground ball up the middle and threw back to first base in time for the game-ending out.
