Nevada Appeal at 150: Feb. 12, 1931: Einstein announces changes in theory

Elaborating on previous announcements that he no longer regarded the universe as limited, Albert Einstein declared that recent discoveries tended to show the universe is constantly expanding.

New questions have arisen whether the expansion process will ever stop, and the possibility is seen that if the process continues, the universe will become so loosely connected that natural laws will cease to function.

These questions follow recent discoveries that the nebulae are moving away from the stars in the galaxy at a speed of 7,200 miles per second, forcing scientists to disregard the theory of a limited universe.

This continues the Appeal’s review of news stories and headlines during its Sesquicentennial year.
