A Carson City woman celebrated her 100th birthday Saturday.
Born on May 7, 1916, in Bremerton, Wash., Maysie Lord grew up in a Navy family who lived in several places around the U.S. She was employed as a secretary through most of her adult life.
In 1937, while in her early 20s, she moved to Hawaii where she lived for five years. She was in Hawaii when Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941.
In 1946, Maysie met and married her husband, Ellis, with whom she shared 37 happy and fulfilling years. They had one son, Deane, and lived in Alameda, Calif., for 30 years before moving to Escondido, Calif. Ellis was a machinist while Maysie continued her career as a secretary with Dorr Oliver Manufacturing Co. She retired after 20 years of service.
Maysie moved to Carson City when she was in her 80s and became a member of a water aerobic class at the Carson Aquatic Facility. She works crossword puzzles daily.
Maysie’s favorite hobby is quilting. She has created more than 100 quilts and wall hangings. She said she enjoys shopping for colors, materials and themes for her quilt projects.
With two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, Maysie feels blessed with the family she has been given. She gives special appreciation to her daughter-in-law, JoAnn.
When asked her motto to live by, Maysie said, “Do the best you can and don’t do anybody any harm.”
