150 Years Ago

Mint juleps. According to the Gold Hill News, there is going to be a Mint in Carson. Abraham Curry’s fingers are itching to get hold of the Mint papers. The cornerstone will probably be laid in June and coin of the Nevada Mint in circulation by next winter. Mint juleps are revived as the standing drink in Carson.

Wants to be a watchman: Day before yesterday one of the Mint Commissioners received a letter addressed to “Mister H. F. Rice, Nashunal (sic) Bank, Carson City.” In it Joe Davis, a crippled soldier, requests the job of watchman. He says, “ ... having lost his left eye and right arm in defense of Uncle Sam’s farm and the Constitution ... Wages is (sic) no object.”

130 Years Ago

Artesian water. A good flow was struck on the Holstein Ranch about a half a mile West of Shaw’s Springs at a depth of 70 feet from the surface. Clarence King in his geology report called attention to the fact that artesian wells could be secured at almost any point in the Carson and Eagle valleys.

110 Years Ago

Bridge lights destroyed. The lights on the new Virginia Street bridge stopped burning April 18 at the time of the terrible earthquake in San Francisco. It was discovered by the electricians that the pipes containing the wires conveying the current to the bright lights had been bent apart and twisted out of shape by the earthquake. (Enterprise)

70 Years Ago

John Koontz. Former auditor and recorder of Esmeralda county and now deputy state bank examiner, announced his candidacy for Secretary of State. He is a veteran of World War II and a native Nevadan. He was born in Goldfield where he was later engaged in the grocery business.

50 Years Ago

Advertisement. “Homes for sale: Assume VA Loan, three bedroom, one bath, single garage, large corner lot, modern kitchen, $1,500 down; $17,300. Custom built home designed by a lady. Includes all of the convenience for the housewife. Three bedroom, 2 1/2 bath, formal dining room, large family room, separate utility, concrete block fence, covered patio, oversize double garage, hot water heat; $47,500.”

Unclothed David. Capitola, Calif. — A picture of Michelangelo’s David adorns a restaurant sign and some people want to put some pants or a fig leaf on the picture. But the owner of the Caffè Michelangelo doesn’t understand what the fuss is about. He says in Italy, no one would object to highbrow nudity.
