Senator Square: Enjoy an evening with CHS’s orchestra, concert band and theatre arts

As the weather moves from a beautiful spring to a hot summer, staying at home is simply out of the question, especially with two free performances of music and drama aimed at the community of Carson City. The Carson High School Orchestra and Concert Band will deliver “A Night with the Classics” at its annual spring concert on May 18, and CHS Theatre Arts presents “The Taming of the Shrew” (in the old west) on May 26. With nothing to lose, except a little gasoline, why not tickle the ears and let out a laugh with some amazing students from CHS. And one more reminder, graduation for the class of 2016 takes place Saturday, June 4 on the CHS football field, and everyone’s invited to attend.

CHS ORCHESTRA, HONOR, AND JAZZ BAND

The instrumental music department brought home three trophies last weekend from its competition at the Music-in-the-Parks Festival in Vallejo, Calif. Jazz Ensemble — 1st Place, Wind Ensemble — 1st Place, Wind Ensemble — Best High School Band Overall. Please come and hear these wonderful award winning groups along with CHS’ award winning Orchestra and Concert Band at the annual spring concert, “A Night with the Classics” on May 18 at 7 p.m. inside the Carson City Community Center. Donations cheerfully accepted.

SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK

CHS Theatre Arts presents Shakespeare in the Park. Shakespeare’s classic comedy The Taming of the Shrew, in the old west, takes on a new twist in this knee-slapping, hoe-downing “battle of the sexes,” starring Taylor Koop, Kailyn Kiesow, Delany Lauderbaugh, Melanie Proctor, Sarah Thiele, Claudia Arechiga, Autumn Cuellar, Robin Johnson, James Fakkema and Jacob McNellis.

The play happens at 6 p.m. on May 26 at the Carson Capitol Amphitheatre. Admission is free.

SENIOR CLASS PHOTO OPPORTUNITY

Attention all seniors of the soon-to-be-graduating class of 2016. One last photo opportunity will happen the morning of graduation. This is the photo of everyone together one last time wearing caps and gowns. Get a copy of this photo by going to EDMODO, or get one from Ms. Golik in room 243. The deadline for ordering this photo is May 25.

SAFE GRAD FOR SENIORS

Attention seniors and parents, registration forms for the CHS Safe Grad party and trip were mailed out April 4, and the deadline for registration is today. This opportunity is a great way to celebrate graduation and spend an exciting last time with classmates who are going in different directions in life. The party, held at Carson City Community Center, is filled with games, music, dancing, entertainment, swimming, raffle prizes, and food. Go to “Academics,” then “Counseling Department,” then “The Scoop,” or pick one up in the Guidance Office. And check this out: some scholarships are not awarded because no one even applied! Graduation is just around the corner, so don’t be left wondering what to do next.

CHS 2016-2017 SPORTS SIGNUPS

The CHS Athletic Department is holding only one informational meeting for the 2016-2017 school year on May 23 beginning at 6 p.m. in The Morse Burley Gymnasium. Important information regarding sign ups, eligibility requirements, random drug testing, concussion testing, and physicals will be discussed. Parents, guardians, and athletes should attend this meeting. Coaches will be available. Questions? Contact the Athletic Department at 283-1900.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK

Erika Murray is the CHS student of the week. Erika has been a member of marching band at CHS and has shown great talent in graphic design. In addition to taking Graphic Design III, Erika is taking five AP and honors classes. Erika is a mature and diligent student. CHS is an amazing high school because of students like Erika Murray!

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week’s senior spotlight is on Jessie Balkwell. Jessie has a GPA of 4.53 and is finishing her college preparation with a full load of AP and Honors classes. She has been an integral part of CHS leadership over her last four years and is presently the Senior Class Treasurer. She has served as the freshman class treasurer, the sophomore class vice president, and the junior class president. Jessie has organized and participated in numerous activities and fundraising events through leadership including helping to plan and organize prom. In addition, Jessie is a member of CHS National Honor Society, Key Club and Interact Club. Through these service organizations, she participated in numerous community service projects including building a playground at Bordewich/Bray Elementary, food boxing for the Salvation Army, and many blood drives. Jessie excelled on the varsity track team for three years and was a state qualifier twice in the 4x800 relay. She’s active in her church where she volunteers by working in the nursery and helping with various events. She’s a member of the Harstine Island Missions Team, a group that volunteers at churches throughout the country. Jessie spent a month volunteering with this group last summer and plans to do the same this summer. Her ability to maintain a high GPA while involved in so many activities is amazing. Jessie accepted admission to St. Martin’s University in Lacey, Wash., where she will seek a degree in chemistry, hoping to pursue a career in pharmacy. CHS appreciates the time and effort Jessie has spent in making Carson High School a better place and can’t wait to see what good things she will accomplish in her future!
