The Popcorn Stand: Community comes through for WNC

The Carson City community is never shy to lend a hand. The community’s generous heart was on display again Sunday through Tuesday as the Western Nevada College baseball team was fund-raising to attend the Western District Tournament this Thursday through Saturday in Trinidad, Colorado. The Wildcats earned the right to advance to the tournament by winning the Region 18 tournament last weekend in Henderson.

In their final year, the Wildcats needed to raise $12,000 to help offset travel costs. And the community stepped up raising more than $15,000 in less than 36 hours.

We wish the Wildcats luck this weekend as they head into the Region 18 tournament against Trinidad State, Miles and Yavapai. The double-elimination four-team tournament starts at 1 p.m. with WNC taking on host Trinidad State at 4.

We can’t help but think about the story it would be if the final chapter in the history of Western Nevada College baseball was written at the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.

Good luck Wildcats.
