Community sports: Johnson wins Monthly Masters event at Silver Oak

Eric Hoyle, Wes Camp and Kevin Johnson won Flight 1 at recent Silver Oak Men’s Club tournaments earlier this month.

Johnson shot a net 62 to win the Monthly Masters event. Bert Wells was second at 65 and Jim Silsby was third with a 66. Johnson had the low gross round with a 66. Bret Lowrey was closest to the hole on No. 6. Scott Lusty won Flight 2 with a net 62, two shots clear of Manny Lopez. There was a four-way tie for third at 67.

Camp won on May 8 with a 64, one shot better than Lee Plemel and three better than Larry Johnson. Plemel and Camp won low gross with an even-par 72. Shane McInnerny won Flight 2 with a 63, four shots ahead of Dennis Prutch and Robert Martin. Martin was also closest to the hole on No. 2.

On May 1, Hoyle carded a net 62 to edge Plemel by three shots and Johnson and Milo Beauchman by four. Lusty won Flight 2 with a 62, two shots better than Michael Matuska and three ahead of McInnerny. Jim Silsby won closest to the hole on No. 2.

Alexander clinic a success

The 24th annual Fred Alexander Memorial Family Golf Clinic was a big hit on Sunday. More than 500 participated, and were treated to a trick shot show by Peter Longo. More than 40 local golf professionals donated their time to teach kids and adults alike.

The pros helped with the short and long game, and information about all the local courses was handed out. Backpacks and golf clubs also were handed out.

Aces for Burke, Guy

Donnie Burke III an Dale Guy recorded holes-in-one recently.

Guy, playing in the Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club event at Wolf Run in Reno on May 11, used a 9-iron to ace the 135-yard par-3 5th. The shot was witnessed by Tom Sawyer of Reno, Bill Hetherton of Minden and Marshall McCurdy of Sparks.

Burke III, using a pitching wedge, aced the par-3 144-yard 2nd at Thunder Canyon Country Club.

Sullivan trio wins at Thunder Canyon

Karon Sullivan, Cheryl Burke and Susan Hood shot a low gross of 158 at the May 12 women’s event at Thunder Canyon Country Club.

Mary Anderson, Jeanne Brennan, Barbee Waldre and Barbara Plymell won low gross with a net of 129, one shot better than Joyce Powell, Lolene Terry, Donna Schellin and Jane Beckett. Lynn Greenman was closest to the hole on No. 8.

Team La Fata knocked off Team Server, 146-142, to win the British Day of Golf at Thunder Canyon.

The La Fata squad won 79-65 in foursomes while Team Server won four-ball, 77-67.

Jerry Hughes, Larry Goodnight, T.C. Boice, Mike Bennert, Mike Schellin, Randy Plymell, Emy Ramiro, Mike Fraga, Dave Westfall, John Lukens, Leroy Bowser, Rick Millard, Dave La Fata, Chuck Griffin, Steve Sear and Bill Buttrum were members of Team La Fata.

Voss, Hetherton shoot 67s at Empire

David Voss and Bill Hetherton shot net 67s to finish 1-2 in Flight A at the recent Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club event. Voss won the tiebreaker based on a better score on the more difficult holes.

Mike Vadnais shot a 63 to win Flight B by six shots over Charles Bell. Skip Yokota won Flight C with a 63, two shots better than Nick Paul. Mala Chizek won Flight D with a 65, six shots clear of Jack Medeiros. Bob Luth won Flight E with a 66, a shot ahead of Myron Carpenter.

Johnson wins at Dayton Valley

Denise Johnson carded a 45 to win the Dayton Valley Women’s Club Par-4s tournament on May 17. Jona Kremp and Teri Paden tied for low net with 41s.

Steph Hanzlik won low gross for Flight 2 with a 56 and Reita Bass was low net with a 47, M.V. Gentry, Nancy Mortensen and Cheryl Smith won low gross for Flight 3 with 60s while Suzanne Mohr won low net with a 40. Carlyn Evans won Flight 4 with a 71 low gross and Jean Ely had a 47. Karen Ferreira shot 75 for low gross honors in Flight 5 and Christine Bunnell had a low net of 77.

Saints continue to roll, now 9-0 in league

The Saints won three more games to improve to 9-0 in the Talents Carson City NFL Flag Football League.

The Saints beat the 49ers 58-30, the Seahawks 64-36 and the Packers 41-20. The 49ers are 5-4 after beating the Seahawks 43-34 and the Packers (4-5) 48-20. The Seahawks are 0-9 after three more losses.

Danny Cazares had nine TDs for the Saints while Alex Myrehn had four TDs and a TD pass. Caid Milligan had two TDs and two TD passes. Kory Grist had nine TDs and Conner Baker had five scores. Blade Benjamins had nine flag pulls. Hunter Green led the Packers with seven TDs while Kevin Aguilar had two TDs and nine flag pulls with Michael Murphy adding eight flag pulls. For the Seahawks, Erick Vasquez had three TDs while Kenneth Villagrana and Joel Altamirano had two each. James Adams had eight flag pulls.

Carson Wolfpack wins soccer tourney

The Carson FC Wolfpack won four straight matches to win the U17 division of the California Regional League Showcase over the weekend.

The local girls beat the Santa Cruz Breakers 2-0 thanks to goals by Rachel Henley and Valerie Sue Meyer. They followed that up with a 2-0 win over Mustang Soccer Club with goals from Zahori Toledo and Eva Swearingen. In the semis, the Wolfpack won 1-0 over West Coast Soccer Club Wonder on a goal by Mak Yarnell-Williams. In the finals, Bri Wood’s header was enough for a 1-0 victory.

The defense was led by Dani Dowling, Williams, Jordyn Howell, Wood, Woodbury, Henley and Meyer plus keeper Gabby Nickel.

Tigersharks looking for youth swimmers

The Carson Tigersharks’ summer program is quickly approaching, and slots are still available.

The program features USA certified swim coaches with more than 30 years of experience. The program runs from June 1 to July 31, with two swim sessions per week and periodic beginner swim meets throughout the summer.

To qualify for the program kids must be able to swim 25 yards on their front and back.
